Catching up during lock down !
« on: March 22, 2020, 12:21:12 PM »
Hi Everyone, Since most of us are on lock down and are in or around our homes due to the current crisis It is important that we some how keep our sanity when dealing with our family members since (like me) we are not used to having them around us 24/7. Luckily most of us car enthusiasts/car collectors/Buick nuts, whatever you want to call us have side interests also. Automotive literature, Auto parts, Model car, Vintage tools, Model trains, boats, planes. Whatever you like to do now is the time to do it.
As for me, I've been spending as much time as my body will allow in my non-heated garage going thru cabinets and shelves and cleaning out whatever I don't need or haven't used in years. Then when my butt gets cold I come inside and work on my Literature collection for a few hours (and warm up). And in the evening I'm on this website reading old and new posts and add my 2 cents in whenever I can. I've been following Bill with the repair and painting of his 64. I can totally relate to what he is doing since I do 90% of my own work.
Like most of us I'm waiting for the warm weather to get outside and start swinging that wrench, welding that panel, and painting that part. Lets all Keep our sanity, keep our distance, keep in touch with our families buy phone, and stay well. We will get thru this...

I hate to make it seem small, but life here seems pretty normal except for the empty streets. Wisconsin is the land of taverns, so with the lockdown, I'm sure the state will suffer from the lack of DUI fines. Hmmm.

So I spend time in the fortress of solitude. Just DBAU (doing business as usual), but since most of the car shows will be cancelled this summer, Im in no particular rush, except to get out and grab some gears! Just glad I have a nice warm shop to work in. Just try to keep occupied guys. AND dont watch too much news. I just heard a shrink say that. Check in once a day of so. Otherwise it will lead to OCD (our own cabin fever LOL).  Happy Motoring!   Bill in Two Rivers, Wi.

Dear Tony, Jim, Bill, and cooped-up mid-60s Buick owners,

Should you come across something that would interest everyone while you are cleaning up and so-on, don't hesitate to post your discovery on this forum!  We are all going to be spending more time on the Internet, so having something to look forward to on this forum will also help make the time pass more easily.

Cheers, Edouard  :occasion14:

I cleaned and protected my Buick mags and tires, lug nuts with renaissance wax.It is used for preservation of museum pieces. I?ve used it for years on many other items. It can be used on metal, wood, paper, leather, etc.
It protects from corrosion and finger prints. Water runs right off. Works great on firearms.

Edouard That is a great Idea  :idea1: Since we will be in this situation for a while we can post our garage finds, stuff in our literature collections, or whatever keeps our interest. Or like the wife says "whatever keeps you out of trouble" :icon_biggrin:

Hi everyone, My friend dropped off a bag of auto related magazines last Wednesday. I brought them in the house this morning and started going thru them, and in the April 2020 Hagerty magazine page 34 was a story of a 65 Gran Sport by owner Rick Church of Ohio. Does any of us know the GS ? It looks like it could be yellow or beige with the stock wheel covers.

There's a shutdown here in Pa too, effective 3/19. But my workplace produces military/medical products, so we're still open. I've been busy with yard work (17+ acres worth!)....wintertime is when I do brush and dead tree removal, and cut down those damn vines that are trying to take everything over. Spent the past 2 weekends splitting my Kubota in two to replace a leaking trans seal. Finally got it together today so it's ready for mowing season!
Hoping to get back on my car projects when weather gets nicer and I get caught up with yard work!
Sure wish I could get a break from my workplace but it's not happening yet. Wonder what is going to happen if coworkers start getting sick? Hoping we all get through this okay. Stay well guys!
Edit: My workplace has changed our schedules.... they split the workforce into two teams. One will work Mon-Tue-Wed, and the other Thurs-Fri-Sat. They'll be long days but it'll be nice having 4 day off per week!

Re: Workplace crowding... My pal up here works at Federal Mogul, chrome plating piston rings. On second shift with 200 people in the building they are saying to wash up and keep that social distance thing. Very little effort is going into "housekeeping" there with everyone touching all the parts, part carts, and sign off sheets with a pen on a chain.  Ill bet that sooner or later, one person will handle an electronic pad and each employee will be issued a laser pen to "sign off" with. Of course with any factory with a smoking ban, all the peckerwoods "chaw" and spit on the floor. Yumm.

Fork the powers that be. Look out for you and yours!

So with all this extra time, I think Im gonna wet sand and cut the B/L and make it shine like a show car. Theres a few mistakes to correct and with time a luxury now, why not kick it up a notch? I hope the fingernails hold out LOL...     Bill

We had a severe snow storm here in Michigan in 1978 that closed everything. My dad had just bought a new 77 Skylark, basically a Nova with a vinyl top,to use as the family truckster. So,we are going to pile in and go North for the weekend because nobody had to work. Most people would close the doors and put a log on the fire, but my dad plowed through the snow to get to the cabin in Glennie. We slip and slide about 150 miles to get there only to be ran into the ditch by an idiot who was driving way too fast to steer. The best part is that we are now literally in a ten foot ditch on our own property in front of the cabin.....My dad never said a word,he opened up the trunk, grabbed some beer, and sat down at the table with a bag. He opened the sack and took out an 18 wheeler model truck with several bottles of paint and brushes. Two days later,we were putting on the Pabst Blue Ribbon decals on the side of the semi trailer and calling a wrecker to pull the car out. It kinda makes me wonder how long that beer and model had been in the trunk of that year old Buick.

Hi Buick Lovers,
Good to read the high spirits with you blokes doing what you can to occupy your time. I loved the story about the 77 going into the ditch, and your Old Man grabbing a beer out of the trunk...priceless.
Australia hasn't gone into total lock down yet however we are all ready for it and believe its only a matter of time. State borders close tonight and the hospitality industry has closed. I've put my Skylark into a temporary lock down until things come good again, the Aussie dollar isn't fairing too well against the USD so parts are fairly steep.
Our weather is no where as cold as what you get in USA, so we don't line or heat our sheds. Unlined sheds and a dry country equals plenty of dust, every spare part I have on shelves in the shed is covered in dust in no time. So I'm spending my time making a few sealed shelfs to store parts away from the dust. Easy work that will benefit in the long run.
If the lock down continues for an extended time I have my body rotisserie now, so there is a chance I will be bugging you blokes about how to remove a body from frame. I will also have space for frame components to be stored. Loren has already provided advice but I haven't turned a spanner yet.
Stay safe and well my Yankie Friends
Marcus

Good to hear from you Marcus.  Enjoy the parts cleaning and shelf sealing.  Does that involve simply making cabinets with doors instead of open shelving?  It seems that the dust around here finds its way through gaps in doors and frustrates efforts to keep it out.  But in the end, it's worth the efforts.

Removing the body from the frame is a big time mental milestone in the restoration process.  It typically won't go without issues, but we'll save that discussion for another day.

Stay safe and be well!

Hi Everyone, I have a draw in my toolbox that's marked Specialty tools. And in this draw of many different tools there is a sort of wrench that I inherited from my father. I have no idea what is used for, but I come across it all the time.. Last fall I did some research on the tool. From my research I found out that the tool company (Miller) made many tools for Chrysler & Studebaker. So that answered half of the question ! When my Father came to this country (1951) his first job was replacing engines in Taxi cabs, and those cabs were all Chrysler products. Then he worked at a Dodge Dealership for a few years until the owner switched from Dodge to Buick. So that's how it made it's way into Dad's toolbox.
The information stamped on the side of the tool reads MILLER MFG.CO DETROIT USA.C-3279A  So what is it used for ??  If anyone has any ideas please post them.
I took some photos of the tool while in the garage this afternoon, take a look.

                                                                              Thanks

Very interesting Tony. I have a special tool drawer with some mystery tools also, unfortunately I made some of them many years ago. is that a 12 point socket on the end of the shaft?
