Well it is definitely cold here in Nebraska also. With minus temps overnight and single digits today. Postal service is cancelled as is school in Lincoln. But..., school in the rural areas just had a late start. Makes me wonder about those city folks and how hardy they are. LOL

It made minus 20F today. Winds-a-howlin' and moving snow on its own. Plus the town is "helping out". Local fish tug is breaking ice today to prevent ice jam up river.  No Buick fun for a few days. Anyone see a 455 manual trans flywheel go blowing by???  ws

Today was a nice "crisp and clear" northern Wisconsin day; just a little cool and breezy, as in 40 mph sustained breezes...   ws

All

At my house on the North side I match Mark Ascher who is on the South side of the Twin Cities this morning.

My house in the Brainerd Lakes area of Minnesota was -35 this morning with -60 windchill.

Expect to break a 130 yr low record Thursday morning.

It hasn't been this cold since winter of 1995-96.

Remember your mother told you not to stick your wet tongue on the flag pole in this kind of weather.

It's not bad here in eastern Pa, it just dipped below zero for the first time this season. Tonight and tomorrow will be the coldest then a warmup into the 50's is expected next week along with some rain.

I can't imagine trying to live where it gets as cold as some of you are experiencing! The coldest I experienced was a Vermont ski trip I did with a bunch of friends. It was 18 below in the morning. We watched the Weather channel for a few hours then finally ventured out when it warmed up to 12 below. The skiing wasn't too bad but the chairlift ride to the top was brutal....windchill was somewhere around 30 below. After 2 runs we headed over to the gondula lift... and quite a few bar breaks to warm up.

Are houses out your way built to handle these temps?  And how does the wildlife cope with this cold?
Hang in there.... better times are coming.

Walt , most of the houses are suited for the cold weather up here in MN . That being said there are some issues that pop up , like septic systems freezing up which my sisters did today . Some of the mobile home or trailer houses will have water lines freeze if they aren't properly insulated , I know a few people that live up here in them and they will simply let they're faucets drip slowly to prevent them from freezing up .
When its EXTREMELY cold like it is tonight ( 35 - 40 below ) even stranger things happen like this morning Excel gas company called all there customers in our area and asked everyone to turn there thermostats down to 63 because of a strain on there gas usage . Which makes NO SENSE to me at all .
There was quite a few houses that didn't have enough gas pressure and they lost heat around our neighborhood .
We weren't one of them . I have in floor heat in our house and one of my pole barns that is heated with an outdoor wood boiler , it is equipped with a natural gas back up and works very nice .
Anyway hope everyone stays warm .

It is now 4 with a wind chill of -15 here in NYC. My GMC truck started so i drove the boys to school so they did not have to walk in the cold. The day is off to a good start.     :thumbsup:Tony

John, you're not alone in being asked to reduce thermostats by the gas company.  Except here, Consumers Energy made the plea to drop stats to no more than 65 because of the combination of extreme demand and a fire at one of their facilities yesterday.  Not a good combination!

Only -18 with -37 wind chill here this morning.  I'd love to have that natural gas, but it's not available here, so I'm hoping the propane holds out until the next delivery.  The propane company manages that automatically, but I'm going to monitor it myself and make a plea if needed.

Then, this weekend, the temps warm up and we're supposed to have heavy rain and flooding.  The ground's frozen hard with 8-12" of snow on top.  The heavy rain melts the snow, but the frozen ground can't absorb it.  I'll probably be putting my wet vac into duty in the basement again  :angry9:

Stay warm and keep your cool!

 :cheers2:

Somethings wrong when it’s ‘only’ -18. Its ‘only’ -23 in GB. Not looking forward to our next utility bill but at least no ones asking us to turn down the thermostats.

Sure hope your propane holds out and the basement stays dry.

All

-30 at the house this morning.
-38 at the lake.

Big improvement in windchill not so bad.

We live rural not in town so we utilize backup plans.

7 acres of trees for fire wood.
Use natural gas but have 2 fireplaces for backup and recreational use.
Spare generator for power failure as long as you have fuel to run it and test it regularly.
Have large hot water heater and can fill up two bath tubs if looking bad.
Have well and septic. They have never frozen but there is always a first time. 5 gal bucket with cover for real emergency.
Heated garage to improve chances of vehicle starting. New vehicle are even known to have issues.
Farm tractor with 5’ snow blower and loader to get out of 1/4 mile long driveway.

Fortunately this level of weather typically doesn't last long or often.

It’s just Mother Nature reminding us who the real boss is.

If I think about all this my working wife can set in her office at home talking working and communicating with people all over the world without having to brave the elements unless she chooses to. How times have changed.
