Battery Cable Group Purchase
« on: August 26, 2020, 06:44:04 AM »
Adding to the thread about the availability of reproduction battery cables for the 65 GS at http://65gs.com/board/index.php/topic,4789.0.html

I've have a conversation with American Autowire and they confirmed that they will include in a one time group buy, cables for both the 1966 GS, which I know many of you own, and for other 1965 V8 Skylarks.  Pricing for the group buy will be at a discount from their retail pricing, but I don't have a quote yet.  I'll confirm pricing when the quote is received and when we have final numbers on the quantities that will be purchased.

So, just like for the 65 GS cables, please indicate here if you would like to purchase cables for either the 66 GS or the 65 Skylark with 300 CID V8.

I'm showing 3 numbers!!!! Can anyone help clarify?
Sources: 1965 Buick parts book; 64-66 Special platform Canada parts book; 1966 United Delco book; 1940-1972 Buick parts book

Group 2.341 NEGATIVE (-)
2983780 (64-65 All Special & Skylark) 30" length
2987235 (Special, less Gran Sport HD battery & clamp(?) jobs)
4A-30 or 1L-30

Group 2.342 POSITIVE (+)
2987273 (Special, less HD battery, clamp option & Gran Sport)
2987272 (Special with HD battery) 41" length
1L-38
6297829

What the heck is a "clamp job"???
What did the HD battery option on the Skylark involve? I know '64 Skylark had the GS style terminal/horn block, did adding an HD battery in '65 create the same junction point?

Does anyone have a set of original Skylark cables for comparison?

I believe a "clamp job" refers to the bolt through clamp style top battery terminal (65 GS) vs. the spring ring (65 Skylark 300 & 66 GS).

There was a police option for the Special. I recall a few things about that option, it had a high output alternator and a solid state voltage regulator .  There was also a cable that went from the interior to the carburetor to raise the idle.  I think that is the reference to HD battery option.

Good information - thank you!

I hate the spring ring - the clamp (bolt & nut) is a far superior design.

I love originality, but also make upgrades when appropriate (e.g. disc brakes, etc.). Just saying I would not be opposed to an otherwise correct set of cables with clamps instead of spring rings.... :dontknow:

Do we have a consensus on the correct Skylark part numbers?

But definitely interested in the Skylark version too.  At least 2 sets please.

Dan, my apologies for not responding sooner. We finally got back to Nebraska last month. Starting to catch up on things here and have been able to look through my parts books.
I can not find reference to a couple of numbers that you listed. Part numbers 2983780 and 6297829 . I've gone through four different Buick chassis parts books. Mind you, these are USA parts books. It looks like you have referenced a Canadian parts book ?
The other numbers are good from my references.

I checked the books I have here, not finding much usable info specifically for the 1965 GS. Buick changed the numbers for 1966, and by 1974 they had a more generic cable which fit many applications.

Buick 1966-only parts book.

These are 1966-only numbers:

2.341 Cable, Battery Ground (Negative)
1966 4600-9000 2987233

2.342 Cable, Battery
1966 4600 2985191

Note: 4600 is Skylark GS, 9000 is Riviera.
Sometimes it has a listing for 65-66 4600 (GS) but not in this case.

From a 1966 Assembly manual:
.....same numbers as above.....

From 1940-74 Parts book:

2.341 Strap-Cable, Battery Ground (Negative)
65 4000 Gran Sport H.D. Btry & Clamp jobs    8907369
66 4600   8907369

Note: apparently a new pn replaces the 65 and 66 GS Neg cables. this cable is also used in other 62-up applications.

2.342 Cable, Battery to terminal block (pos)

*no listing for 1965 GS*
66 4600 8907345

Anyone check the 1965 Assembly manual? That should provide yet more data.

Walt, you're a genius!  Why didn't I think of that??  Here's the data from the 1965 Skylark Assembly Manual:

GS: Positive 2989274; Negative 2983776  (same as on my original 65 GS cables)

300 V8: Positive 2987273 (2987272 with Heavy Duty Battery option); Negative 2987235 (both with Spring-Ring terminals)

V6: Positive 2987273; Negative 2987235 (both with Spring-Ring terminals)

So, if we assume no Heavy Duty Battery option, both the 300 V8 and V6 have the same numbers: Positive 2987273; Negative 2987235 .  Dan H., are you good with these?

Yes, put me down for 2 sets of the Skylark cables too (so 4 sets total for me). Any idea on cost?

Thanks again!

I'll finalize numbers with AAW soon and then will be able to give a more accurate cost estimate.  Checking out another couple of potential buyers.

A great holiday weekend to all!!
