Just an old Newb...
« on: December 22, 2018, 03:21:32 PM »
Just dropped down into overdrive from the other Buick place across the hall. Been Buicking my whole life and currently own a 1972 XGS/455. Been in the market for another project and think Ive found it. Gonna go look tomorrow at a 1964 Skylark Special 2 door post. The V6 and 3 on the tree are going and a 455 with a M20 are going in, I hope. The car is clean with 33K on the clock... should be a fun trip.

Just dropped down into overdrive from the other Buick place across the hall.

Well by all means - welcome to 65GS.com! . . .

Been Buicking my whole life and currently own a 1972 XGS/455.

. . . . .Oh my!  Now what have you been doing with that raw unseasoned lumber? . . . . .

Now that's much more like it!  Stick to the mature Buicks . . . . . They really don't seem to come into their own until after they are 50 years old!  :laughing7:

Thanks Everyone !! I feel like I know a lot of guys here! I havent mentioned anything across the hall "yet" LOL, and dont wanna step on any toes here fer sure! I promised to tread lightly and carry a medium sized stick. Now I have to get used to all those emoticons above! Once again, let me get my shoes off before I get my feet wet. YES, the castle is in TRIVVERS (sp). Thats the way I spell it because the un-knowing mite say TRI-vers.
I hafta try a pic, cuz we all know I like doing that! This guy is missing ONE original hub cap and one piece of fender trim. For those who dont know me, I like all kinds of old iron. Mostly from Milwaukee to Michigan LOL...  ws   :overthetop:

Bill,
Once you remove the engine and trans in it, I am interested in the bellhousing, dust cover, z-bar, and clutch fork.  Missing those items for a 64-65 4-speed setup I am putting together.
'64 Skylark 2dr ht 4 speed, 300-4
'65 GS ht, 4 speed,2-4s,AC,PS,PB,PW,Pseat,Tilt
'66 Skylark 2dr ht 300-2 automatic
'78 Yamaha DT 400 2 stroke
'88 Ford F-150 4x4 (used to be 4x2)
'89 Ford F-350 4x4
'03 Honda Accord Coupe V6 6-speed manual (daily driver)

Ill keep you in mind... right now the power is an odd fire V-6 with a 3 on the tree. I want this car for the third pedal. If the bell housing is for a nail head(?) I may go in that direction, but I'd really like to stuff a 455 with a Muncie in there. Whatcha able to teach me about this one? I know the later BBB stuff and Model T Fords like the back of my hand but this medieval stuff eludes me LOL...   ws

Welcome aboard Bill!
Hope you get the '64, we like it better than the Chevelle you were checking out!
The V6 manual trans stuff should fit the 455, AFAIK. Except the flywheel. Nailhead requires totally different bellhousing and clutch linkage since it has the starter on the drivers side of the block..... and the conventional style z-bars won't work.
Good luck with the buy!

Are you also considering a 5 speed instead of a 4 speed while you?re at it Bill? Overdrive would be nice on the interstates, Power Tour, etc. That said I don?t have OD in any of mine but for the money I spent I wonder if I would have been better off. In SD and other states the speed limit is 80.

That looks like a real good starting point. It is getting very difficult to find these with nice original quarters. I like all the post cars because they will take that "twist" that willl likely occur once removing the v-6. I had questioned if the Buicks were available with the overdrive three on the tree like chevys. I saved an old cable operated overdrive from a mid sixties Malibu wagon, but I have not seen that setup in a Buick.

I'll definitely second the OD suggestion (Re: Just an old Newb...)

Dear Jim, Bill, and mid-60s Buick Lovers,  :love4:

Are you also considering a 5 speed instead of a 4 speed while you?re at it Bill? Overdrive would be nice on the interstates, Power Tour, etc. That said I don?t have OD in any of mine but for the money I spent I wonder if I would have been better off. In SD and other states the speed limit is 80.

I don't have a manual tranny, but my trusty wagon is much happier with her 200-4R overdrive transmission.  Like a modern car, she will end up in overdrive even on city streets at as little as 35 mph.  It reduces the noise, but doesn't affect the performance really.  Driving on the freeway is much more pleasant in OD.

So I'll second that suggestion!

Cheers, Edouard  :occasion14:

Well fellow mid 60's Buick lovers, I do have an '88 T-bird turbo coupe with a factory T-5 trans in it... Hmmm.  Its got a weird shifter in it tho. This guy has the odd fire V-6 and the bell housing looks like the standard BOP pattern. Even the clutch feels good. I hafta see how all this comes into play with the '73 455 and 400 turbo the seller threw in for an extra $200. WHAT A DAY. The whole package was 3700 including 100 mile each way delivery.

Can one of the mods please OK my wife, PAT, to post? She sent an application in 2 days ago and hasnt seen any response yet. Ppat 324.

Anyways, heres a few picks from today after concluding the deal. Delivery is supposed to be Wednesday.    ws
