Trunk lining material
« on: November 19, 2009, 09:21:07 AM »
I'm looking for a source for the factory correct trunk lining material for our '65 GSs. It should be a tan/brownish fabric weave with a foam backing.  A close reproduction was previously available from CARS, Inc.  However they can no longer get it from the manufacturer. I think it was SMS Auto Fabrics. Anyone know another source?

BTW, I will not use the vinyl/rubber trunk liners available. They will trap moisture and rust out the trunk pan.  Seen this happen too many times. If you have this type of trunk liner, peal it back and take a look.

Thanks,
John Egel

Hi John
I've been searching for this material since 1970. Every dealer stated the vinyl, even after I showed them a sample of the cloth and foam.

From what I heard this is the material that was used on the 64 Electras & Wildcats?.

Correct foam-backed trunk material referenced above is available from Clark's Corvair.  www.corvair.com

Apparently it is also correct for Rivieras.

Ask for sample part # R196. $75/yard.  52" wide.  You will need 3 yards (to be on the safe side) to complete 1 trunk.

Anyone have a template of the original trunk mat?

Curious if all 65's used that material, or if it varied with assembly plant?
My Baltimore-built 66's (and my '65)had it, but my Fremont built 66's did not.

It was 2 pieces, correct? .... one on the hump over the axle, and the other piece covered the trunk floor.

Are 5-10 ppl interested in these ? Maybe we could get them the measurements and have them cut to fit.

I'm interested-as I do not have the pattern for the GS.
Just be glad -the Wildcat has 5 fabric patterns and 3 cardboard parts....convertible unique...hard to duplicate!

I would be interested in possible 3 sets--have 3 cars--all came with this material, and all now have the rubber mat.  Only Buicks I have ever seen that came with the rubber mat were the base model specials (not special deluxe).  The 65 4dr I had and sold to JMOS had the original rubber mat in it when I got it.

I already ordered 3 yards :( But I would be interested for 1 or 2 for my other 65's.

I'm interested in 4 sets. I have the rubber mat now but it does trap water,I peel it back at the end of each season to see if any moisture has built up. So far I have been lucky ....

We could make a template from the (incorrect) mats currently available?

Just curious, anyone have a group & part # for the correct weave/foam trunk mat?

Jon,
By your dimensions what is the min amount of material would we need ? We can calculate it both ways and see which would be more favorable.
