Holley Street Demon carburetor
« on: September 03, 2016, 07:42:02 AM »
Anyone here running one of these? Looks like a pretty nice carb. Especially the black one.

Did Buick use four barrel carbs on their motors? Rochester Quadrajets?

In 1965 it was a Carter AFB (Re: Holley Street Demon carburetor )

Dear George and mid-60s Buick caregivers,

In 1965 Buick was using the Carter AFB on their 300 cid V-8s.  That's one of the reasons I switched to EFI.  I had a lot of trouble getting one of those to work.

I don't know when Buick switched to Quadrajets.

Cheers, Edouard

'66 was the first and only year that a Q-jet was available on the nailhead.

I have one with a Qjet now, works great. The Carters seem to be fine too. I have also used the Holley Street Avenger and they are great carbs.

If you're sticking with the 300 engine, the hard part is finding a 4 bbl intake.....They were only made in 1965 and are scarce and expensive!

I have no experience with the Holly SD, but a stock AFB is already tuned for the 300 and will cost a lot less!

Dear George, Walt, and mid-60s Buick caregiving community,

I didn't have any luck getting an AFB rebuilt that worked very well.  However, that was long before I turned to the Internet to find out who could be trusted with carburetors like the Carter AFB.  I agree with Walt, the path of least resistance is to get a properly rebuilt AFB and see how the engine does with that.  You can always make upgrades later.

Cheers, Edouard

P.S. I did have my Buick 300 cid engine running on an Edelbrock Performer carburetor which is a "descendant" of the Carter AFB.  The Performer is a remake of the Carter carburetor that came after the AFB but was otherwise very similar.  I didn't like that carb very much either.  However, my 300 engine might have already started to have problems with the valve timing and that might be why I didn't like the Performer.  Otherwise it might another very reasonable choice.

So, I see some 4bbl intakes for the 1964 motor, but these only fit the 64? Not the 65?

The 1964 had aluminum heads?

So, if I cannot find a 4bbl intake for my 65, I must go with the stock 2bbl, right? What is a good carb setup for that? Just the stock carburetor?

Any other options?

How do I identify my motor/heads?

Hi,

65 300 4v intakes are hard to come by, I have heard of someone who used a aftermarket 215 4v intake with intake spacers. You would have to fab a valley pan cover as well.

There is a 300 4v 65 on evil-bay right now only issue for tou is its on the east coast

1964 parts not particularly "hot." (Re: Holley Street Demon carburetor )

Dear George and mid-60s Buick fans of speed parts,

The 1964 had aluminum heads?

So, if I cannot find a 4bbl intake for my 65,

It is true that the 1964 300 engine had aluminum heads and intake manifold, but they weren't designed for high performance.  These were still passenger car components designed to give the smooth ride that Buicks were expected to provide.  So you won't gain much by trying to upgrade to those parts.  It isn't like the Stage-1,2,3, & 4 Aluminum heads for the Buick big-block.

I gave you some more clues to follow on your other thread.  Basically you need to decide if you are content with the 210-250 horsepower that you can get from the 300 or if you just got to absolutely get . . . . . MORE!!! . . .

Cheers, Edouard  :occasion14:

Right, 1964 300 had aluminum heads and intake.

The ports on the aluminum intake are smaller than those on the 1965 iron heads/intake, about 1/8".
The 64 intake will fit on the later iron heads but you won't get maximum performance from it.

I'm ok with the 300, I don't need a big powerful motor right now. I could always upgrade later. Since I had the motor apart, I thought it might be a good idea to put in a slightly better cam. But if its not going to give me much improvement, I'm ok with keeping it stock.
