......Since I had the motor apart, I thought it might be a good idea to put in a slightly better cam......

If the cam was a worn lobe or two, you might as well upgrade to a Crower cam.
Brian was in this situation with the 300 in his '66.... cam had excessive wear, so in went a Crower.

Keep your eyes open for a deal on a 4bbl intake, either the alum 64 or the iron 65.
Even a later 350 4bbl engine is an easy swap and will give better performance.
You have a ways to go with the car before it HAS to have an engine, so there's no rush.

Cam could be victim of not enough ZDDP (Was: Holley Street Demon carburetor )

Dear George, Jim, Walt, and mid-60s Buick caregivers,

There could be a number of older engines that have excessive cam wear because of the switch to standard oils with less ZDDP.  It appears my trusty wagon's 300 suffered from that fate in part because her engine was rebuilt in 2001, but the cam was unusually worn by the end of 2010.  I suppose I wasn't the only guy who didn't hear about the effect of less ZDDP on flat tappet cams which are the standard on these "mature" engines.

Something else to consider to give your Special a bit more zing is to upgrade to a dual exhaust.  It isn't all that expensive and reducing the back-pressure will definitely give the engine more "spirit!"

Cheers, Edouard  :occasion14:

P.S. Of course if you want to avoid my predicament, most definitely avoid watching the TV show: "Flippin' RVs" . . . . . .  :laughing7:

. . . Not to tempt you or anything . . . .

I'm back from an exhausting Orinda Classic Car show where my trusty wagon was finally a genuine star! :angel4:

This was the first time I've gotten my wagon out since they finally gave us a road to actually drive on.  It was also the first time after making some additional adjustments to the electronic fuel injection.  As I went down the hill - the roar was gone!!  This engine is quieter than the 300 cid engine it replaced!

Electronic Fuel Injection is a serious upgrade, but I never imagined it could be the improvement it has turned out to be!

FYi, . . . . Edouard  :occasion14:

P.S.  Expect full car show coverage hopefully sometime tomorrow.  I haven't had time to even download the photos from my camera!
