I guess it is a 65, the PO kept mentioning, "64, registered as a 65".

BTW, my name is George.

That is a base model special since it has the plastic dash surround instead of the full dash pad like a special deluxe or Skylark would.  Looks like someone put the door panels, carpet, and seats out of Skylark in it.   Base model special would have had rubber mat  and more plain looking seats.  The data tag says the model number starts with 434, which means it is a Special.

Is that a bad thing, that it's a Buick Special? Skylarks are higher value?

What else can you guys tell me from the data plate?

Wondering if I got ripped off? I didn't really know anything about Skylarks or Specials when I looked at it, I just wanted another classic to get working on.

Looks to be a '65 Special with a few Skylark items thrown in.  '64 glove box lock was in the dash above the glove box door. Early '65 by the down flow radiator.
Looks to be a manual top, don't see the switch on the dash.  Skylark had power top as standard equipment in '65.
Door panel and arm rest are '65 Skylark, seat adjuster knob is '64.

Not a bad thing, just interesting
The first "4" of the "434" means it is a Buick,  the "3" means it is a Special and the next "4" means it is a v8.
Which is what the engine appears to be, the 300 with the 2 barrel carb.
It also has the Skylark trim on the outside. That was an option to the Special.

It is a manual top. He gave me  power unit for the top.
It's still a nice car, right? Or at least can be some day.

Yes it is and will be a nice car , seems to me that not enough Specials are being saved.

It was built  the fourth week of December '64.  The 028 means it had a black vinyl seats bench style.
Kansas assembly plant. Red with a black top [R-1].

Is it taboo to go with a different color top/interior? Or, are these cars better left original? I don't mind the black top and seats too much, just thought that tan might go better with it. The tan probably wouldn't get as hot as the black, sitting out in the sun.

The top that was on it, what was left of it, was white.

Any of you guys know if the floor pans come with mounting holes (threaded) for the seat bolts?

It's you car, go for it!

Mine was originally a white exterior with a red interior. It is Champagne Mist with a red interior and a red top.

The full floor pan with the braces comes with seat belt mounting points that are threaded and the seat mount points also are threaded.

I didn't find half floor pans with threaded mounts

If you're installing bucket sets, mounting strips are available. They get welded to the top side of the floor.

I LIKE Specials! You can modify them a bit without the purists criticizing you for decreasing their value.
If you are buying/restoring this car to resell for a profit, it's not the best choice.
If you want to build something to personalize and enjoy for yourself, it's a great car to start with. Build it how you want!

Dear Mark, Dan, George, Brian, Loren,

Yes it is and will be a nice car , seems to me that not enough Specials are being saved.

Well, I'm doing my part to save one Special wagon!!  :hello2:

Kansas assembly plant. Red with a black top [R-1].

Bummer, I was hoping it was another Fremont, CA car so it could be a sister to my wagon!  :love4:

Looks like you've got an interesting project George!  Take your time but make the effort to make that convertible - YOURS!!

Cheers, Edouard  :occasion14:

P.S. Does it seem to be a "he" or "she" convertible?  Any names coming to mind? . . . . .  :angel4:

My '66 Special....
It's not restored to original... it's better!
300 V8, added a 4 bbl intake, dual exhaust, Richmond 5 speed trans, fast-ratio steering box, fat swaybar, and disk brakes. Great driving car.
I just call it my 'Special'. It's an it, not a he or she! Some people say 'nice Chevelle'.... yeah, whatever, thanks. :drunken_smilie:
The '72 SS' license plate was just stupid (bad) luck.... or maybe a wise guy at the DMV....
Built it 'my way'.
