Government really going to the dogs? (Re: Springtime Causing the Lull)

Dear Dan, Chuck, and mid-60s Buick caregivers and citizens,

I still didn't talk you into that Star Wars air cleaner? I went on a road trip and I am starting a petition to get it done.

Well, that ain't going to happen, but that's a very interesting picture you took.

. . . So does that mean the government really is going to the dogs? . . . .  :overthetop:

Cheers, Edouard  :occasion14:

I have put a few hundred miles on the 65 this year so far. I sure like the new steering gearbox in it too.

Dear Jim and mid-60s Buick "upgraders,"

I sure like the new steering gearbox in it too.

Okay, I'll take the bait.  Which steering gearbox did you upgrade to?  One of these days I'll have replace the gearbox in my trusty wagon.  As far as I know it is original and therefore has quite a few miles on it!

Cheers, Edouard

Edouard, The quick ratio box, I got mine from Hector on V8Buick but I'm sure others have them. My original was sloppy and we couldn't even get the wheel perfectly straight during alignment. This one is a little over three turns lock to lock compared to four turns with the original. I guess I didn't look that close but believe the boxes look stock on the car.

Hector's steering boxes use the 12.7 ratio gear set, same as used in the mid 80's Grand National, Monte Carlo SS and even Jeep Grand Cherokee.
He offers rebuilt boxes with the option to have the new gears installed into your original box. Very good price too.
I HIGHLY recommend a fast-ratio steering box, it makes the car drive SOOO much better!
Before the 1980's boxes became available, a 70's Trans Am box could be swapped in for the same ratio, but the steering limit stops would reduce the turning circle diameter.

Anyway.... car season is finally arriving here in Pa. :hello2: Mother Nature teased us with an early taste of Spring in March, but then gave us more cold temps and even a snowy Saturday last week. Temps are finally getting into the 60's and higher this coming week.... That's a mixed blessing as it also which means everything in my 13 acre 'yard' is going into growth mode! Still have lots of cleanup to do....removing dead or overcrowded  trees and the invasive shrubs and vines that are trying to take over! Once it's cleaned up, weekly mowing will be easier.

Car plans will first focus on updating the 1980's resto on my blue '66 for the BCA meet in July. The smoothed firewall will get returned to stock, and the gloss black underhood sheetmetal will be redone in the correct satin black.

Curious how many of you guys are retired? ..... or is talking about jobs/work against board rules??? :icon_biggrin:

Yes.... spring yard work.

We're on 6.5 acres here in Nebraska, so I know what you are feeling Walt. Ended up with a small acreage tractor with a 5' belly mower.  The little JD rider took too much time . LOL

Fast vs variable ratio steering box? (Re: Springtime Causing the Lull)

Okay, that's interesting.  However, I have a buddy with "sleeper" 1971 Chevelle that he has souped up and has a variable ratio steering box.  He is extremely happy with that.  As he puts it, the variable ratio has all the advantages of the fast-ratio boxes and none of the annoyances.

Any thoughts on that?

Cheers, Edouard  :occasion14:

I'm figuring I have another 30 years of banging and spraying cars. That would put me at 66 for retiring.
Holy crap now that I'm thinking of it. I've already been a body man painter for almost 20 years. Damn now I feel old. Lol. [emoji22]
