Here are a few pictures, I kind of feel like this is the holy grail.
Hope this helps, I purchased one from Postons and it was pretty close, but it fades very quickly

If anybody needs anything else please ask.

I would be interested in just the base of a hood ornament if some one has one .
Doesn,t have to be nos or anything but one that can be rechromed to look nice .

Dear Dan, Joe, John, and fans of 1965 Buick A-bodies,

Thanks for sharing the photos.  They do seem to confirm that the Federal Standard colors I listed are reasonably close.  I also have the Poston reproduction and when I touched it up, you cannot see any difference between the original paint and the areas that were touched up.

I purchased one from Postons and it was pretty close, but it fades very quickly.

That's going to be one of the biggest challenges in either restoring an existing ornament or creating a reproduction.  Finding a paint with decent UV resistance and yet can be easily applied will be difficult.  I suppose one alternative would be to try to create some sort of "decal" that could be put over the surface of an ornament which would be replaced periodically.

Cheers, Edouard

Fading might not be as big an issue now. Years ago these cars were outside and being driven by their original and subsequent owners and exposed to the elements as driver cars. Many of them now only spend a few days (or even hours) a year outside of the trailer or garage.

I need one. I want something in good to excellent condition though. I also need some rocker molding. Anybody have any good leads?

I have one on my parts car.  I'll take some pictures and post them here.  It's not excellent, but much better than the one on Ebay!

And I also seem to need rocker moldings.  I'll have to look into that as well.

Chuck

Id be interested pending those pictures....

Here's what I have.  All intact, no cracks.  Could use replating and some paint.  I haven't tried to clean it up yet.  That's how it came on the car.

Let me know when you find it and ill pay you right away . I,m hoping to start sending some parts in to get rechromed in a few months .

Chuck was kind enough to sell me his parts car ornament (thanks Chuck).  Now I need to figure out if I can make it pretty.  Anybody had any luck removing the tri-shield film inside the ornament?  Is it glued in or what?  I have a guy that will re-chrome it for $100.  Just need to get the shields out.

Thanks for any enlightening info.

What is your restoration plan? (Was: hood ornament on eBay)

Dear Buick_65 and fans of 1965 Buick A-bodies,

Chuck was kind enough to sell me his parts car ornament (thanks Chuck).  Now I need to figure out if I can make it pretty.  Anybody had any luck removing the tri-shield film inside the ornament?  Is it glued in or what?  I have a guy that will re-chrome it for $100.  Just need to get the shields out.

Unfortunately, I don't know the answer to your question and that's were my attempt at restoring my trusty wagon's hood ornament collapsed.  I had bought a hobby electrolysis chrome replating tool in the hopes of trying to put chrome around the Tri-Shield emblem but not disturbing it.  Alas the ornament was too far gone to restored in that way.

If you have the ornament rechromed, how will you put back the Tri-Shield?  Okay I haven't thought this business through, but the only way I could imagine rechroming that part was if you could prevent chrome from being deposited on the locations where the Tri-Shield belongs.  Otherwise it will be all a shiny slick surface and there will be no way to put back the Tri-Shield - right?

Am I must missing something about this process?

Edouard

P.S. By the way that hood ornament on eBay never did sell even when the price was lowered to $45, so guys out there can see junk when it is presented as such.

My line of questioning was intended to illuminate the path to restoration.  I figured I could get the tri-shields off, rechrome, and reapply them in a similar fashion.  What I don't know is how they are attached.  Was hoping someone may have stumbled across the correct answer at some point in their resto.

Thanks,

I've always thought the tri-shield was on with some sort of adhesive.
Given these are 50 years old, it is darn good adhesive too. LOL

Whole ornament chromed? (Was: Hood ornament on eBay)

Dear Loren and mid-60s Buick hood ornament experts, . . . .

I've always thought the tri-shield was on with some sort of adhesive.
Given these are 50 years old, it is darn good adhesive too. LOL

So do you think the hood ornament was chromed in one piece and the Tri-Shield logo was glued on afterward?  That would be some miraculous adhesive!!
