Trunk Color
« on: August 14, 2015, 06:47:16 AM »
What is the correct spatter paint color for a 65GS trunk, gray or aqua? Is the mat the same color as the trunk? I have a gray trunk with a aqua mat. Was the spare tire board used in 65? if so what color. Just trying to get it right. Thanks

Glenn,

All the 65s I've seen had grey in the trunk. I've seen varying colors of the "flecks" in the grey. If you're going to go overboard, the trunk mat is unique to 65, available from one supplier, and expensive; it would also need foam backing glued to it and comes in roll stock, so owner needs to trim & cut to fit. Most use the Aqua houndstooth version readily available. The spare tire board is painted a medium grey. I can give you a formula I had mixed at Home Depot if your nutzo bonkers like me.

To build on Mark's reply, here's a picture of the trunk in the Steve Shuman red convertible.  According to Steve's records, this mat was installed in August 1979, so I assume it is a good example of the factory condition.  Everything is gray, including the spare tire board.

Cheers!

Chuck,

Is that a vinyl mat?  Can't tell for sure at this end.

As Mark pointed out , the original was a woven fabric with a thin foam attached to the back.

Chuck,

I'll grab a pic of the trunk later and post. I have a few other pics from original cars I'll post as well.

This is a picture of a '65 4 door trunk that Mark posted a couple of years ago. The trunk mat is a woven material.

Wow, thanks for all the information and pictures of the trunk and trunk mat. I remember seeing Al Jones's 65 at Bowling Green several years ago with the correct mat. I had forgotten about that.  The gray color on the tire cover is a solid gray. I should be able to match that using the spatter can lid as a sample when I go to the paint store. Thanks guy's for the info.

Yep, it's vinyl.  I'm surprised to hear the originals were woven.  I can't remember ever seeing a car with a woven trunk mat back in the day.  Thanks for more education!

Vinnie,
Stop by and look at the yellow cars trunk. I used Zolatone, a two part splatter paint used in aircraft and boating industry, looks great, original and very durable. I have enough left to do your trunk, you're welcome to it.  I also have the original spare tire tire cover and fastener.

I tried to load pixs but am not able to.

Hi Rollaround,

I assume you are offering to show the original spare tire cover and fastener to Glenn.  But if you are saying you have an original spare tire cover and fastener available for sale and Glenn is not interested, I'd like to be next in line, please.  PM or email with details.

Cheers!

Chuck,

I haven't looked at the other jack parts offered lately, but take a look in the Fusick catalog.
They have the cover hold down. Do you not have the cover itself?

I have both in Steve Shuman's car, but neither in my restoration.  In fact, the restoration has no jack, lug wrench, etc.  There is a jack in my parts car that I can refurbish.  It's probably not stock, since it has a solid "T-beam" section, but should be usable.

Thanks,

Chuck
