GM used the two different switches without any pattern--I have seen both types in '65 models. The housing on the column is made different for the two different types of switches. My guess is that they had two different suppliers because one could not supply the full demand, so you will find different ones in different cars depending on which supplier the parts came from that week. My '65 special 4-dr. had one type, and my '65 GS had another--both were built in the same plant.
By the way, the BPC switch is a much better, more durable design, so if you are out looking for a complete column, get one with the BPC style if you can.
