« on: May 17, 2011, 02:07:57 PM »
I have found and had the correct three speed made by ford rebuilt but the bearing retainer is for a gto witch is a larger diameter and don't want to machine it to fit in case i ever want to sell to a pontiac guy if anybody has one or if you know where i could get one I would appreciate the info. Also need the shifter. Thank's Glenn.

Glenn,

If you contact a trans shop who deals with the older 3 and 4 speeds they should be able to hook you up with a new one and then you can get it machined to the correct outside diamenter

the biggest cost is machining setup so you may want to have a spare made as well believe last 2 I had done for a muncie 4 speed cost me 70 bucks

You may want to try Larry at D & L as he just did a Autogear unit for my car

Good luck

Thank you Jim. You don't by chance know the correct diameter for the buick throwout bearing?  Now all I need is a shifter. Glenn.

Also check the OD of the bearing retainer flange where it bolts to the trans.
To install the Richmond 5 speed into my '66, that also had to be machined down to fit the Nailhead bellhousing.
A quick measure of the retainer shaft for the Nailhead gives 1.357". I can double check if you need a precise measurement.
Here's a pic of the Nail vs Richmond retainer, showing the larger flange:

Glen,

The size I used was 1.356, just had a trans done by Larry and that is what I had him turn the new retainer down to and it went in no issues still have yet to get it going but that is another story...

Glen, Buick didn't install  Hurst shifters on the '66.
Pontiac and Olds?.....maybe. I'd have to research it.

There are adapters out there to mount a stock-looking handle on a Hurst shifter body. If you decide to go that route, make sure the Hurst has a detachable handle. Some are one piece and can't be removed.

Thanks Walt. I bought the correct one from gssizzler this summer but a guy said he had this one out of a 66 he parted so i thought would take a look someone must have changed it. He said he triped over the whole set up for years and saved the shifter and scraped the rest what a shame. Well maybe next time!
