intermittant shifting issues
« on: September 29, 2010, 03:53:17 PM »
Just recently out of the blue my 4 speed Hurst shifter decided that it wasn't going to down shift into 3rd gear.  I pulled the dust boot from the top to check it out.  It was missing one of the main mounting bolts so I replaced it and snugged everything else up that I could and cleaned it and it felt great.  The next day I took it out for a cruise and it seemed to be fixed.  Drove most of the day with no issues then it decided that it wasn't going to down shift into 2ND.  drove around for a few and it felt like it fixed itself again it felt good shifting through the gears fine.  Then it felt like it didn't want to go all the way into 1st gear.  I ha vent brought it to anyone yet I though I would try here first and fix it myself if it is possibly a shifter issue.  Anyone have any clues to what could be happening?  Thanks Dave   :dontknow:
now wouldn't you rather have a Buick

If it is coming and going like that, I would agree that the issue is in the shifter and/or linkage.  If it were an internal transmission problem, it would stay broken and not get better.  Also check that the clutch is engaging properly.  If it is still turning the trans input shaft when you press it in, that will cause shifting issues.

Start with the basics...check all the rod end bushings and shift lever holes  for wear, make sure all shift levers are tight, then  go thru the shifter adjustment procedure......
Put it in neutral, insert 1/4" dia rod into alignment hole. Back off the stop bolts.
Disconnect each shifter rod and adjust it's length so it easily fits into the lever hole.
Readjust the stop bolts.
