Wanted dead or alive 65 GS radiator
« on: May 06, 2023, 10:37:58 AM »
Hey all , looking for a 65 GS radiator for manual trans with NO AC . The core doesn't need to be in great shape but the tanks and water necks need to be in good shape . Let me know what's out there .
Thanks in advance.

I think mine are for automatics, or are they all the same just manual cars had the holes plugged?

Ok, I did a little research in the parts book. There are two radiators listed for the 400 engine. One is for AC applications and the other is for non- AC applications. There is no reference for manual or automatic transmission.
The only manual car radiator I've had, had plugs that were screwed in the holes where lines for an automatic transmission would be attached.

Or, you can do as I did and have a couple of metal discs soldered over the holes for the AT coolant lines when the new core is installed. Then a bit of fill around the discs before painting. Looks like a manual trans radiator.

Hi,

The 65 Gran Sport 3 speed I parted out had plugs in the Radiator, just like Loren mentioned.

Thanks Loren .  I thought they might be the same as far as auto and manual trans but I know the upper water outlet is shaped differently .

A non- AC radiator has a straight upper hose neck. The AC radiator has a 90 upper hose neck that sits at an approximately 15 degree upward angle.
I can't say for certain if there is a difference in the number of rows to the core.

The ONLY diff. I know of is the A/C radiator has more fins per inch for better cooling.
The row of tubes is the same & of the same size.

When I retrofitted factory AC into the Verde Howitzer, I started with the non-AC radiator from the car. Had the tanks removed and the straight upper fitting removed. Had a "gooseneck" angled fitting installed for the upper hose connection and had a new core installed. If I remember correctly, the AC core has 4 rows and the non-AC core has 3. The core itself is thicker, but mounts into the same tanks.

Jim ill do some checking and see if there is any differences in the 66 , I might want one of your 66 rad.
Chuck , who did you use to have the new core installed in your rad. ? I had a guy in WI. build me a radiator for my 70 Cuda and it was ABSOLUTLEY PERFECT . You couldn't tell it from brand new .

Hi John,

My radiator was refurbished by a local guy that used to do welding and soldering. He's retired now but was a favorite source for my friend that painted my car. He first removed the old core and we took the tanks home and bead blasted them. Then he installed the core and the new gooseneck. I did the painting when it was returned.

Ok, here's the research from Buick parts book.
 65- 400 Eng. A.C. or A.C. Modif.                   P/N 3005828 126.20 RADIATOR
 65- 400 Eng. less A.C. or A.C. Modif.             P/N 3005827 109.25 RADIATOR

 66- 4600 Less A.C. & A.C Modif. & H.D. Rad.  P/N 3005827 109.25 RADIATOR
 66- 4600 A.C. & A.C. Modif & H.D. Rad.         P/N 3005828 126.20 RADIATOR

Group number is 1.219 for all above P/N

As we can see from the Buick parts book, '65 and '66 share the same radiators.

I thought they looked identical in my cars. Makes sense they would be the same for those two nailhead GS years!
