Do in dash clocks really work?
« on: March 28, 2023, 01:18:17 PM »
My recollection of in dash clocks, which goes way back, is they don’t work well if at all. I have never wanted to install one for that reason. Am I wrong? Can they be restored to really work?

Seems like they worked a few months when the car was new. The problem now is cars are stored and probably have the battery disconnected requiring resetting the time every time you drive the car.

The quartz conversions work well. (Re: Do in dash clocks really work?)

Dear Kurt and mid-60s Buick caregivers,

My recollection of in dash clocks, which goes way back, is they don’t work well if at all. I have never wanted to install one for that reason. Am I wrong? Can they be restored to really work?

You recollections are correct, but if you are willing to have your clock converted to a quartz movement they keep very good time.  I had the clock in my trusty wagon converted by a company that alas appears to be out of business.  However, Instrument Services also does this sort of thing:

Has anybody had them to convert a clock?

Cheers, Edouard

I bought the kit & did my own MANY years ago.
Still works extremely well.
Pretty easy to do IF you follow the instructions.

Took my clock out and repaired it. It was the contacts/points that wear down. I put a small dab of solder on the points, then slightly hit them with a points file. It's been almost 2 years and it keeps great time. It's only disconnected when in storage during the off season or when working on the car.
There is a post from Loren on this fix.

Perfect replies. Now so will start to keep an eye out for a good used clock. I am not in a hurry for the Skylark dash build, so I can be patient. ????

I also had mine converted to quartz movement a couple of years ago.  It has been working well since.
