clousure on steering column
« on: April 15, 2021, 02:14:04 PM »
On a 1967 GS 400, the steering column has a closure plate down low. It covers the wiring to the steering wheel.
It looks like the piece should have spring clips that hold it in place but plate is loose.
Hard to describe; attaching picture.
If anyone knows what this piece is called or know where to get one, please let me know.

Thanks

It's called "mast jacket wiring cover"

And, yes, it uses two spring clips to hold it in place.

The clips were used across many (GM) makes and model, years.

I know from 64-67, maybe more.

If you are a member of V8buick.com, there are a couple of guys that salvage and have quite a few part sources.

If not, I can try and see if anyone has a couple. Do you need the cover and spring clips, or what specifically?

For some reason I do not see a way to reply to the messages.

Thanks for sending; it looks like I probably will need the clips and cover. The cover is there now, but held on with tape. If the clips are not permanently attached to the cover, I guess the clips might work.
As you can tell, I need to know more  :icon_thumright:

...If the clips are not permanently attached to the cover, I guess the clips might work. ...

The wire harness needs to be completely flat and not be stretched tight so that the cover is not being pushed away from the underside of the mast jacket (tube).

Often the wire harness gets kinked or routed and is tight, then the cover does not set against the jacket correctly and the clips pop out.

The clips are spring steel, but not real robust, and they lose tension over time, from rust, or get bent out of shape.

If you are carful, with the cover and wires moved out of the way, you might be able to work with the clips and see if you can get them to install, and then try with the cover.

Let me know if that does or does not work, I'll see if I can find a source of clips for you.

after looking at the piece again, there is only one piece of a clip left. It looks like that clip is sort of fused to the cover by rust.
I should probably replace the cover and clips.

If anyone knows of a place to get both, please let me know.

Thanks
