300/340 Small Cap HEI recommendations?
« on: January 11, 2021, 06:39:17 PM »
Does anyone out there have a recommendation for a small cap HEI/non-points conversion for the Buick 300 & 340?

---> I'm looking for a plug-and-play, no-hassle, non-ignition box option where everything is contained under the distributor cap (just connect to a regular lookin coil) and it's relatively stock appearing.  Any recommendations? (brand, part number, do's & don't's, etc.)

I saw this on eBay.  Not sure what brand this is:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Small-Cap-BUICK-300-340-BLACK-HEI-Distributor-45K-Coil-8MM-SPARK-PLUG-WIRES/351964543161?fits=Make%3ABuick&hash=item51f2b8b8b9:g:NmsAAOSwA3dYhsFi

---> Or is a points conversion kit the way to go? I had a Pertronix kit like 20 years ago and it failed after a few months. Has the quality improved?

--->
And will any of these conversions impact the functioning of a factory console tachometer?

Breakerless SE single wire ignition conversion.

I've been using for several years now. It was $169.00 total.

Check out their website.  I'm not affiliated just a satisfied user.

Best Regards,
Robert

^^^^ that one gets recommended often. Sold by Lectric Limited:

The one-wire hookup is nice for a stock-looking setup.

There are other options.... Petronix, Crane, etc.
I have a Petronix in my Special, a Mallory Unilite in my blue 66 (working fine since the 1980's), and points with a Mallory box (similar to MSD) in my red 66. The points/MSD/Mallory setup uses the points as a low current switch so they last much longer.
