Looks good...Are the elky quarters as good as they look? I am curious how much you have to do to get the Buick lines in place. Do you plan on removing quarter or rebuilding those with Buick stamp lines? It should be pretty unique one you get it together. The dash is easier than it sounds because the top can be left in place if the metal is clean and just use the buick lower. My upper dash is out of a chevelle when I was doing my Buick because I found a clean lower windshield area and spliced it in. This will be a nice one to watch going together.

Hi Schlepcar,
At this point I am going to remove the Buick front end and doors and put the Elky back together as a Chevy sitting on a Skylark GS frame and drivetrain. The Elky was painted and all parts still look good so I am going to drive it that way. Today I took a 1965 Chevelle 396 radiator to a shop in Ukiah to have it converted to work with a 401 nailhead. The previous owner did a poor job of installing a cross flow radiator in the Elky. I bought the interior materials years ago when I was going to put the Elky back on a El Camino frame that would have had a small block Chevy engine. My daughter was going to drive it to school. Family friend was in a bad accident and permanently disabled her daughter and at that time we decided our daughter should drive my F250 instead. So for now it is reassembly time. It will be a nice looking driver with a nailhead 401 and a five speed. Now I just have to figure out how to upholster bucket seats and install a headliner. Oh, and glass.

Situation has changed. The El Camino (Elky) shell I was going to use for a body to build a Bucamino has damage I didn't realize it had. I knew it was hit in the passenger side on the front, but didn't notice that the door jamb area had been bent along with the part the heater box bolts to. To get things moving I decided to use the gold Elky that is sitting on a four speed, 1965 Skylark GS, frame. It is currently recorded in my name on a non-op, so the Department of Motor Vehicles part will be easier.

I am cutting the quarter panels, door jamb under B pillar, taillight sheet metal, outer wheel wells and the sheet metal that runs across the rear of the body under the rear bumper off and fitting Skylark station wagon and two door sedan parts in their place. I will also be changing out the Chevelle dash for a Skylark dash. All of the body panels will be fit to a poor condition Elky body to make sure it will work, and then I will cut up the gold body and fit and weld all parts.

Yes, there is a lot of sheet metal that will be sacrificed for this project, I just won't tell and Chevelle guys.

Currently my main challenge is finding a complete wagon taillight harness to see how it will fit on the Bucamino body.

The cart, that is holding up the poor condition Elky, I just completed yesterday made from a funky little trailer. Elky is bolted to the cart and rolls around pretty easy, and the body can be lifted with a two-post lift right off the cart.

Next part I need to concentrate on is organizing all the parts I removed from donors and to sell and ship extra parts. (Ugh)

Dear Kurt and mid-60s,

Thanks for the update.  Sorry about the problem of getting wagon taillight wiring harness.  That may take a fair amount of searching.  The tailgate glass channel in my trusty wagon was so badly degraded that I needed another one and it look me a while to find one.  Fortunately, you could use either an El Camino or Chevelle wagon wiring harness.

Please keep us posted on your progress!

I just filled the oxygen bottle so I can do some more work with my cutting torch. I have a decent amount of cutting and grinding wheels to get me moving.

Any inspiration from a "Cadimino" ? (Re: 1965 Bucamino)

Dear Kurt and mid-60s Buick caregivers who seek inspiration on the work of others,

Hemmings has another variation on the grafting of a car and El Camino bed that might be an inspiration for Kurt's Bucamino project.  In this case it is a 1976 Cadillac grafted onto an El Camino creating a "Cadimino":

https://www.hemmings.com/stories/class-and-cargo-are-no-issue-with-this-1976-cadillac-cadimino/

Like it or not, there is considerable "eye-candy" on this custom.

Currently I am going through 20+ years of parts and documenting what bins they are in. Unfortunately I am also dumping parts that I will not be using. This week I should have it all on paper so I can relax and start cutting and fitting sheet metal. I will fit the Skylark sedan doorsto an Elky so they are correct and then start disassembling the wagon….

Dear Kurt and mid-60s Buick restorers,

Sorry for the drudgery, but I'm sure you will be better off once you have completed your inventory and shed off the parts that are right now in your way.  You are headed toward more pleasant pursuits!  Please do keep us posted as you get into the nitty-gritty of the conversion!
