65 T-10 rebuild

Started on the rebuild of the spare 4speed transmission! Kinda of a mess
as the car it was in had a engine fire and the grease got burnt in a little! So had it disassembled to make sure it is rebuildable! Thought that the photos would be a good reference of how a clean one looks and where to find date and casting codes! So far these parts were put in the ultrasonic cleaner and bead blasted!
They look very good compared to the dirty nasty trans that I started with!

So finally got some time to work on more of the 4 speed parts! Cleaned and painted the case! It was very rusty also! First had to put it in the hot tank then I had to use flapper wheels then I had to run it through the bead blaster! But it looks good now! So more pictures for reference! Vin code location,build date and casting date! Also tapped all 20 tread holes!

Here are some pictures with the cast paint on it! I cleaned it with a general paint prep then warmed the case a little with the heat gun! I seem to get better results with this extra step on the cast parts!

Interesting idea to preheat the part before painting.  Roughly how hot or cold is your workspace at the moment?  Certainly if you are working close to the lower temperature limit for that paint, preheating would be only prudent.

Interesting the trans has the cast iron side cover.  In my experience, that was only used on the very late built cars and as a service replacement.  Most came with a di-cast AL side cover.   The earlier T10s had a sand cast AL side cover, but that was pre-64.

Wow, that is a late one!....WG75 2 decodes to a July 7, 1965, 2nd shift.
Mine is a WG65 2, or July 6th. Car was assembled in the final weeks, 3rd week of August 1965.

Jon, do you have your own hot tank or do you take it to a shop? And what is your ultrasonic setup? We have a Crest Ultrasonic console at work, but we use it for optics.... no way I can use it for car parts!

Noticed the VIN is stamped on the case. Is that an 'F' for Flint?
Mine is stamped on the tailshaft, it's a Baltimore car.

 Plenty warm in the garage but the case was still cold to the touch so the heat gun is the best option for warming it! Too warm would also be bad! I take parts to my buddies machine shop for the hot tank! My buddy Randy's ultra sonic cleaner is made by ultrasonic power corporation Freeport IL! Drove there and picked it up! I will have ask the size!? It uses sonic waves and heat for cleaning! We use pinesol or blue dawn dishwashing soap , no nasty chemicals!
Yes trans is a later one with iron side cover! It is a Flint vin 5H , was very rusty on the surface!

Okay, now I understand the situation.  I was curious if you had discovered something unexpected like overheating the part actually resulted in a better paint job.  You never know!

Trans is going back together testfittng checking for cracks ,damage etc.
