Replacement hood ornament tri-shield foils on eBay (?)
« on: November 13, 2020, 02:44:11 PM »
Dear mid-60s Buick parts hounds,

There is what appears to me to be a very unusual item on eBay.  It appears to be replacement tri-shield foils that can be glued onto the 1965 hood ornament:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/1965-Buick-Skylark-Hood-Ornament-Tune-Up-Kit-Tri-Shield-Restore-PAIR/184533315710

I suppose the first issue is a question - is this in fact what it appears to be?  If it is, it would be a great way to upgrade a hood ornament at a bargain price.

Cheers, Edouard  :occasion14:

CARS Buick parts sells them also.

I purchased a set and installed them last year.
They are very nice. Foil and peel and stick. Just clean all your old glue off.

That auction was definitely for an NOS or early-take off ORIGINAL foil. That listing is not a reproduction.

When I looked art the listing, it very clearly said the manufacturer was CARS. So I don't think this is some sort of OEM part.

When you select “sell similar” on eBay it will populate or prompt certain things such as the manufacturer. Clear from the photos it’s an original - crispness of the stamping, lack of the application “tab” from a repro, and the brown glue remnants shown in the photo - all demonstrate this was an original.

If that is true, why did they put CARS in the field for Brand? Did they not know what they had?

Dear Jim, BuickGS65, Keith, and mid-60s Buick parts hounds,

. . . .
I suppose the first issue is a question - is this in fact what it appears to be?  If it is, it would be a great way to upgrade a hood ornament at a bargain price.

Okay, I stand corrected!  I only new about the decal Tri-Shield from CARS.  I didn't know that CARS also had a nice high-quality reproduction of both sides of the hood ornament foils.  It looks perfectly genuine which the decal doesn't.  That is good news!  The hood ornament can be rechromed relatively easily.  With this reproduction Tri-Shield from CARS you can get as close to an OEM hood ornament as is likely to be had.

Cheers, Edouard  :occasion14:

I can only find one CARS hood ornament tri-shield foil set in their website. And from the pictures from CARS on what they are selling for $24.50 a set, it doesn't look nearly as crisp/nice as that eBay version previously listed (now sold). Even the horns on the eBay one are generally pointing closer to up, while the CARS version are almost horizontal. Unless CARS at one time sold a high quality foil (which was the one on eBay) but no longer does, I would say these are very different - and that eBay version was very nice. Would be nice to know if there are more of the eBay version out there somewhere.

Well you certainly know way more about this than I will ever know. I was simply going by the eBay product description. Sounds like somebody may have scored big.

When the Poston reproduction hood  ornament first came out, it was often seen at Buick shows. I recall seeing the shields also. This was many , many years ago. Around the same time the reproduction center caps became available from Romanowski . I remember buying the '65 center cap bird emblem for two or three dollars. Should have stocked up. lol

I think we should have bought everything that was available back then before prices started fluctuating with every election cycle......Are we going to start rating the part like Tesla or Coke. I am going to give the oem hood ornament parts a ?hold? and the repops a ?buy? just for the sake of market volatility.....lol
