4 wheel disc brake conversion
« on: October 07, 2020, 05:18:10 PM »
Hi Mid 6-'s Buick Lovers
I'm in the process of replacing my original drum brakes with 4 wheel disc brakes. I have quotes from SSBC and Summit, freight is a bit of a killer getting parts half way around the world.
The Summit quotation was considerably cheaper. Reading the reviews for Summit gear most buyers seemed happy however there were a few niggling complaints about fluid lines too short, rear axels require machining ect. I was wondering if any one could provide advice as to which company provides the best fit for the 65 Skylark?

Marcus,
I used Right Stuff Detailing. The set was complete and bolted in nicely. The kit I used incorporated Escalade rear calipers, they work well with the Buick emergency brake cable setup. I used a 15" rim and had no conflict.

Hi Marcus,

I did the SBCC set on the front only, including the dual res master cyl. The lines fit nicely. The factory hd drums on the rear were sufficient for my needs. The caveat here is that you're forced into pretty small discs if you stick with factory 14" wheels, 9" rotors I think. I found a set of 15" rallys from a later model skylark and those fit the 11" rotor. The backspacing is slightly different but no issue with suspension travel or steering.

Kevin, I think I rode in that car Monday, it breaks and handles great! Marcus, I see SSBC brakes on a lot of cars on the Hot Rod Power Tour and the owners like them. When it comes to brakes I would stick to the specialized name brands like Elvin and Kevin did.

Thanks for the advice Fellas,

At the end of the day, minor modifications if required are fairly easy while its just a frame and easy to access.

If you cannot tell by my questions I feel quite out of my league working on a car that's not native to my country.

All comments, photos ( those photos are awesome) and advice greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards
Marcus
