Question about starter
« on: August 02, 2020, 03:22:59 PM »
Hi. I just replaced my starter with one of Tom Telesco's mini starters. (Works great, by the way) I still have the starter that came out of the car, I assume it is original to the car. My question: is it worth rebuilding? Is this one of those GS specific parts that can't be found any place? The number on the starter is 1107351 5 L 13 on one side, 870 on the other side.

Thanks in advance,

Keith

I wouldn't be so eager to toss a rebuildable date coded starter away! Looks like it is dated November 65!? Most likely a replacement as 65 production would have ended in Late August first week September!? Your GS is a 65 right?

Jon

I have several 63 64 65 nail heads but not sure which engine gets which starter.

How do we read the date codes on starters?

Thanks

Yes, my GS is a 65. It is a later build, believe May 65 from the Baltimore plant, delivered June 65 (just turned 55 years old a few weeks ago).

How do we read the date codes on starters?

First number is the last number of the year. 5 = 1965

Letter is the month. A = January, etc. However the letter I is not used. So L is actually November.

Last number is the day of the Month.

So for example 4 M 20 = December 20, 1964

Interesting.....so 5 L 13 means Nov 13, 1965, right? Which means likely my starter is not original to the car......I have all the service records for my car, I'll have to dig them out and see if there is anything in there for a replacement.

Thanks, all, for the information. Now to decide what to do with it, definitely won't be throwing it out.
