Rear quarters for 1965 GS Post Coupe.
« on: May 14, 2020, 10:13:50 AM »
I'm hoping to find both left and right rear (full) quarter panels or quarter sections or the rear clip to replace mine on a 1965 GS Post Coupe.  I'm looking for rust free and hopefully (mostly) straight, but understand that few are completely without issues.  Thanks!

Wolf Steel Ltd. in Canada makes some repair panels (see link), including larger quarter panel sections.

Has anyone used these?

Thanks for the recommendation, Dan.  Unfortunately went that route already.  Restoration shop botched the install and now my small rust issue is a huge body shell salvage operation.  Our car has already been blown up and been through a tornado, so this is but a minor speed bump on the pathway to getting it back on the road.  We shall persevere.

Sounds like my hardtop! I had a shop put a original floor in it ,  a repo trunk floor, a full quarter and a partial quarter and things didn't line up to well ! About $4000 worth of work! I couldn't get any bodymen to even consider working on it! So it sat for about 5-7 years! Then I found another shop to take it on ! They basically cut the whole back half off the car of and started again! This time with a original trunk floor, nos left quarter and used right plus a use taillight housing! I was happy with how the floors were done but how the quarters were put on is another story! I pulled it out of the shop! This time $11,000! I put it back in storage didn't even look at it for 6 months! It has now been sitting over 10 years! I really want to crush it and move on! But it is a numbers matching, pop plate ,factory 4 speed car! I bought it with my Dad I lost him 18 years ago now! I have a very bad opinion about restoration shops!

I bought a pair of the small patch panels from Wolf Steel & the body shop was able to use them to fix the rust on my hardtop. They actually cut little sections out of the panels to patch the rusted parts, rather than welding the whole panel in. Sorry to hear about the trouble you?ve has with the resto shops - those stories make me appreciate the guys I?m using! I hope you?re able to get things fixed right after spending all that cash!

Wow, sounds like my story.  We're on #3 shop now, and I believe we're going to get it done this time.  I'm not stupidly optimistic, but the guy who is helping us now is a true fabricator, not just a panel popper or slammer or mud slinger.  "Right tool for the right job" applies to humans too.  He has already been working through several other messes created by the other shops and has done an outstanding job with all of it.

I used to do my own work, long ago in another life and I have been hard pressed to find anyone who has an interest in doing the level of work my brother and I have achieved on our past restorations or required from others, so maybe my expectations have been too high.  I've seen lots of slam jobs rolling out of these other shops since pulling my car out and am more surprised with each passing day that others would be satisfied with the poor quality of workmanship being done on their cars.

In both cases, the car went into the shops under one set of circumstances, but things changed and I didn't catch the queues.  In one case, a guy was working at a shop on his home property.  He was doing outstanding work and had one other guy working for him.  Then he bought a building in town and moved his business there, adding 2 more guys...and the original guy left.  That is when things fell apart.

With the other, the owner moved to another city and started a new shop there.  He sold his old shop to one of the guys who had worked for him in the old shop.  Again I didn't catch the queue, and things went south.  I know it is not a new story.

I feel I'm finally in a (hopefully) solid stable relationship with my new guy now, and it truly a relationship, otherwise we won't get it done this time either.  He knows I'll be watching for the queues.  If this attempt fails, the car comes home and I will finish it and the others myself...somehow.

That is awesome that you found a good shell.  Your car sounds like an awesome Buick!  Love the stick cars!

Thanks for sharing your story.   It gives me hope!

That is how I thought mine would be done too.  To me the Wolf Panels are more of a starting point, not a whole panel solution, although I've seen some good fabricators make them work that way.  I had no idea that my shop was just going to cut the sides out of my car when 90% of the steel was just fine.  By the time the shop sent me photos, it was too late, of course.

If you've got good guys doing good solid work, pay them well and buy them a gift once in awhile!  Take good care of them!

My car is supposed to go to Body Shop Jail soon, hope the term is short and sweet. There sure are some horror stories out there though. Good luck guys!

i have used both..the full section is pretty much junk its a hand broke patch and just doesnt work, but can be cut up and with a lot of work, they are better than a piece of flat steel..
the rear lower sections are freakin awesome..nice stuff, and the body line is right

Good info.  When you're talking about the rear lower sections, are you talking about the short patch pieces or just the lower part of the panels?

I think you would be happy with the fit of the lowers, but to say they are ?right? might be a stretch unless they have made some changes. I trimmed them and put in pieces where necessary because they were straight at the lower edge which is not really how it should look. There have been pics posted in restorations section and John E. had some good detail in welding the lowers back together. (See Oregon-EBay restoration...page 17) I would recommend also that you have a piece of wheel well trim in place before welding up. It is a shame that they cut yours that far apart because they usually are repairable as long as wheel well looks good.
