What's this no hole?

So went with my buddy to retrieve this engine, getting it out of it's hiding place is another story! Anyways this 1965? block  has a 5H!!!!! Vin on it with dated parts!? Dual quad, stick setup with correct T-10 trans! But it has the bung on the back of the block like a 1966 blocks but no lifting hole!? First one I have ever seen like that? Anybody else seen one like it? I would say cast late in 65 ?

Assuming you have a 401?

If my searches are correct, 65 Skylark GS 401 was green, 66 Skylark GS 401 was red. Yours looks to be painted red.

Is that block casting number 1364705 or 1364706? Hard to see this casting number clearly from your pic.

It looks like it was green under the red by the bell housing. Hmmm. Maybe one of the experimental blocks early on?? Hope that chain didnt bend that valve cover! So how did ya find this one? Im always on the look out. My pal gets pissed when I spot stuff; he never does, but I never find anything like this!   Bill

1364705 is an external casting number for a 64-66 401 or 425.  What is the two digit code on the front valley pan rail on the RH side? 

The T-10 will have a stamped date code that starts with a W.

The engine block casting number looks more like 1364706 to me. I think GSSizzler would need to brush the buildup around this casting number off to get a better read on it.  And I agree, the head casting numbers, carb numbers, exhaust manifold numbers, etc., would all be useful in determining what this engine is.

There is no 6: 4, 5 or 7.  Looking close at the first 6 and the last number, there are significant differences at the top. It sure looks like 5 to me. http://www.buicks.net/shop/reference/nailhead_casting_numbers.html

His 5H!!!!!! is a partial vin of the car original to the motor: 5 = 1965, H = Flint, MI assembly plant  followed by the last 6 digits of the original vehicle vin.  Across from the partial vin on the other side of the valley pan rail will be a two letter engine code followed by a three number date code: LR = 1965 400 4bbl, LT = 1965 401 4bbl, LW = 1965 425 4bbl and LX = 1965 425 2x4

Very Cool. I find 3 and 4 speed Nailheads to be the most interesting to me even over a stage 1 455 4 speed, then to top it off this one is a dual quad. Groooovy

OK. The last digit is not an exact copy of the previous "6", I agree. Probably just dirt/debris making the top of last digit appear "curved" to me, not straight. But per the attached view, it looks more similar to a "5" than a "6", so I'm good with it being a "5". Doesn't explain the red paint, but maybe it was rebuilt and installed in a 66 model, so prior use owner wanted a color matching engine, even if the markings didn't support it being a 66.
