Skylark body side molding hardware question
« on: August 11, 2019, 07:58:08 PM »
Hello,

I'm seeking information on body side molding hardware.
I have these plastic clips that were attached to studs.

Can someone here look at the attached photos and determine which side of the plastic clip should be against the painted body surface.
The clip has a flat and a concave side. There are thin wings that are bent toward the concave side.

Thanks,
Robert

Robert, I think the clips go on so the flat face of the clip is against the body and the ‘tabs’ are away from the body allowing them to capture the trim.  If you hold one of the clips next to the trim piece it will help to visualize how the trim fastens to it.
Hope it helps.

The “thin wings “ as you call them, go against the paint. They protect the paint from being damaged by the trim. Also, if you look closely, notice the recessed area where the mounting pin attaches. That keeps the clip in place along with the pressure of the concave side being towards the body.

Thanks,

I had the studs ground off when I painted the car.
I'm going to reattach the molding hardware with individual pieces of 3M molding tape.
I will then reattach my original stainless molding.

They make a body stud weld kit to weld them back on,but it sounds like it is already painted. If that is the case, you may want to put the mounding on the car with masking tape and trace the outer edges. You could attach the clips with smalll self tappers like they use around the windshield clips. You may want to consider using clips with nuts inside trunk where they could be reached. Tape will never look good because it will put a gap between the clip and body. It is also likely to loosen over time and possibly fall off.

Thanks for the insight.
I am gonna re-think the whole notion of reinstalling this molding.

I initially wanted it removed, and was happy without it.  Too much free time lately, I was cleaning the garage and noticed the molding winking at me.

The body is nicely painted and I don't want to screw/cut or weld on it.

(4 speed is working out nicely)

Regards,
Robert

Hey Robert... I cant tell from the avatar what year exactly your car is. I am looking for some decent side mouldings for my '64. These are aluminum and 3/4" wide. If yours are the same and youd consider a sale, please contact me. Bill

Bill,
Here are pictures of my 1965 with the molding before paint and new top.
and after paint without molding and new black top.

I will sell you the molding pictured if you need it.
I am using the fender spears, so the sale is for doors and rear quarters molding.

The molding is 1 1/4 wide.

I don't know how to price the molding, make a fair offer.
Robert

Thanks for the reply Bob, but the 65 trim is about twice as wide as the 64 special. You wont have any problem selling it as its in pretty good demand especially if its nice. Post it here for the true 65 guys!  Thanks again,  Bill in Two Rivers, Wi.

 Robert,
I agree that you should just leave it done.....and I did not realize that it looked so much like my car. Now that you have the 4-speed done even more like mine. You could probably say it was me and I would have to hire ?My Cousin Vinnie?s?  lawyer to prove I was home on the couch when you were reaping havoc on the streets.   Dan

Hey Robert, the Skylark looks good without the molding. Now that you have all of this free time come on over to a meeting. I brought my GS to the meeting last Thursday. I sat in 2 hours worth of traffic but it was still fun to get it out and give it a good run. It was real hot day but I had no overheating issues, never did.
I was a little disappointed that I was the only one that brought an old Buick on such a beautiful day, but I enjoy driving it.... Hope to see you soon.

Thanks for the comments, I get the "my cousin Vinny reference" my neighbor is obsessed with that movie.

The car will remain molding delete.  I'll hold onto the molding and pass it on to someone who can use it.

Tony,
I have been attending the Oyster Bay cruise nights on Tuesdays, Mill Ridge Inn on Wednesdays, and Bellmore on Friday nights.

I've been meaning to get to The Buick Club on the 1st Thursdays. It was good to see you at Wantagh.

Maybe I'm ready for a second Buick to mess with.

Following a couple of Buick Wildcats on Ebay.

Regards,
Robert

Hi Robert, Good to hear that you are getting out with the Buick. I've been busy working on the Buick's and all the other projects around the house plus I've been helping my friend with his 36 Ford Hot Rod, he is getting on in years and can't get underneath so whatever he can't do I do for him. It's a lot of fun working on something other than a Buick. But I'm sure I will meet up with you at one of the Buick club meetings. On the 2nd Thursday of the month. See you then...  Tony
