WTB original (functioning) used Fuel tank sending unit
« on: May 30, 2019, 02:40:55 PM »
Hello,

I inadvertently threw out my perfectly good fuel tank sending unit.
I removed it from my tank and installed a new unit from Rock Auto.

I had planned on fitting a new sock to the old unit.

The Rock Auto part has the wrong ohm and presently my gas gauge is inaccurate.

Please let me know if a forum member has one.

Thanks,
Robert

Robert,

Do you need the sending unit for an air conditioned car (with the fuel return port) or non-AC?  I believe I have both.  Let me know and I'll check it out.

GOOD POST! In my 1964 and my 1972 shop manuals they give no resistance numbers. The new sender I got yesterday measured at 19-98 OHMS (Empty to full). Does this seem about right?  I seem to recall seeing the numbers but that may have been for the dorf T bird I replaced. Ideas??   Bill

I'm not sure of the range,

But

My gauge is / was functioning accurately with the original unit.

I installed the Rock Auto part (PLATINUM PRO FSU010154) listed as correct for my 1965 Skylark and the gauge won't read past 1/4 tank. Rock auto actually send me a second unit in exchange when I complained. The second unit behaved the same way.

After some research I believe the ohm range on the Rock Auto replacement part does not match my original.

Update:
I just discovered that 1964 and 1965 fuel tank sending units are not inter-changeable.
I am only interested in an original 1965 skylark fuel tank sending unit from a non A/C car.
Thanks

My original is gone and I hope to find another and get my gauge to read accurately again.

Robert

You may need to solder a resistor in line. Nice new stuff right?? ws

The difference from '64 to '65 is the ohm resistance of the sending unit. The '64 is a 30 ohm unit and requires the matching gauge . The '65 is a 90 ohm unit and uses a different gauge then the '64.
I've recently replaced the sending unit on my '65 GS with a new stainless one. First time the gauge has read correctly in 28 years.
If Chuck doesn't have a sending unit, I probably have one for a non- AC car.

Yachtsmanbill, that new sender is not going to read correctly in your '64.  If you change the gauge in the dash to a '65 piece,  it will be fine.

Loren,
Where did you purchase the new stainless sending unit.
What brand is it?
Robert

Waiting on Chuck to see what he has.

Hi Robert,

I do have the sending unit still in the tank that I replaced.  It was functioning fine when removed.  I'll have to get it out of the tank and will send you pictures.  Hopefully tomorrow.

C'mon Loren... that stuff is all for reference anyways. The V6 speedo driven off the T-10 makes 45mph which is ACTUALLY about 51 or 52 mph. Drove a lotta cars with NO gas gage. Ad 10 gallons of gas and average 10 mpg's and yer always ahead.  My temp and oil gage was the exception and those are mechanical VDO units.  The chinatemp was wayyy off on a bell curve. Im sure it wasn't running at 260F around the block, but the cap did pop open once.

Ah, for the days of a Model T Ford with a gas stick LOL...

This is the 3/8 SS unit I just purchased. Seems odd that GM wouldve changed something internal (gage or sender) on two almost identical vehicles. If so, I guess Ill make up a deviation card by filling the new tank 5 gallons at a shot.    Bill

Or just replace the dash gauge. I probably have one around here.

Robert,

Here are some pictures of the sending unit.  It was working when removed a few years ago.  Confirms 90 ohms resistance.

PM if interested.
