Dear Dan, Jim, and mid-60s Buick owners who proudly display the Tri-Shield!

They started reproducing both sides....look pretty good from what I can see. Just ordered a set.

WOW! They do look very good.  They are also listed on the CARS website:

http://www.oldbuickparts.com/product_info.php?cPath=97_111_120_127&products_id=12118

It is a dollar cheaper there.  You might save some money if you need a bunch of other things at CARS and thus would already be paying a fair amount of shipping.

The only potential downside for use as a replacement foil for the hood ornaments is that they may not have the clear-coat UV protection that Loren's repainting service provides:

http://65gs.com/board/index.php/topic,2709.msg17347.html#msg17347

So you might have to replace these Tri-Shields periodically.

Certainly the "decorating" possibilities are very interesting.  These might be just the ticket to "rebrand" a product intended for another car line and have company logos that would need to be replaced before going into your Buick.

Does the old emblem just peel off?

Unfortunately, it appears to be fairly difficult to remove the old foil.  The recommendation was to avoid trying although the reason was that you would destroy the old foil in the attempt.  Custom Metal Finishing Indiana was able to remove the old foils on the hood ornament I had rechromed and then I had Loren airbrush specialist repaint the original foils.  That's definitely going about it the harder way.

Perhaps someone had suggest a technique to remove the foils if you aren't concerned about preserving them.

Cheers, Edouard  :occasion14:

The original emblem is stuck on very well.  It should come off using a hair dryer and a flat chisel blade x-acto blade. I've removed the carriage emblem from the deluxe seat belt buckle with success , using this technique.
I'm interested in seeing the replacement emblems that CARS has available.  At the 2015 BCA Nationals, I spoke with Jeff from CARS about making these. At the time they had a decal/emblem available that fit the back side perfectly, but nothing for the front side. The one available at that time was more of a paper like material though.

Trying to save the original foils was something I left to Custom Metal Finishing when I sent them the ornament(from an earlier post from Edouard).....they remove them without damage. I saved one unfaded original and I will compare it to the new one to check size and color. There were several earlier posts about the one side being reproduced so apparently they got the message and did the other side. I will post a pic of the original next to the new when I get time.

Dan, The ones from Carr's look good. How is the quality of the foil compared to the original ones?

Glenn,
I think I would say a little thinner than oem,but still a foil-like backing. I warmed up the ornament and applied them and then rewarmed the whole piece to press them in firmly. They fit excellent, but are not 100% same. The color and fit is nice and the only difference that only Chuck(and other perfectionists).....I have to pick on someone that can take it......will notice is the width of the silver between colors. All in all I think they are a bargain as far as a detail item. I had an extra ornament that I put on eBay if you want to see them installed. It is not perfect chrome on the inside diameter there are a few tiny pits,so I did not list it here. Definitely better than driver condition, but not NOS.

Thanks for sharing the photos and the observations.  Certainly for someone who wants to dress up an otherwise worn hood ornament this is really neat.  Perfectionists might still consider Loran's airbrush artist.  As I already noted, these sort of things could be really neat for creating new Buick-related decoration.  I want to make some sort of a console and these Tri-Shields could be just the thing to make that console fit into Biquette's cabin.  Another place I'm pondering is some speakers with logos from one of d'em utter GM divisions.  So these things could be very useful and at the price, you can afford to use them generously.

Thanks again for sharing all this information!  :hello2:

Cheers, Edouard  :occasion14:

They are definitely an improvement over the old faded originals. It will take someone that is really sharp to catch the small points of difference. And at $20 for the pair, a real bargain.

Dan,

A very good looking repop.  However, for us perfectionists that can take it, the width of the silver between the colors is a bit different.  And the size of the "bubbles" in the silver is larger than on the original.

Did I keep my rep going??   :laughing7:

That's a great find for sure.  And one that this group has been hoping for.

 :cheers2:

I’m in need of an original used front shield - if anyone has a spare. Thanks.

I knew you would notice that Chuck..LOL,I think if they were starting from scratch it may have been corrected. They had already had one side that fit so they just reversed the image. I think I have an extra pair of foils that are in good shape Dan. You can PM me and I will get you a pic of what I have.
