could use some help with parts pricing
« on: July 23, 2018, 06:35:51 PM »
I have a friend who has some desirable nailhead stuff and i'd like to offer him a fair price for the stuff. he said he'd make me a great deal but i'd like to pay him what it's worth as he's helped me out a lot with my Buicks over the years.

rebuildable standard bore 65 425 short block
correct 65 dual quad front carb
Q jet intake
Nailhead sp400 case
various spare nailhead 401-425 crankshafts

Carbs start at around $200 for a rebuildable core and go up from there depending on condition. A real nice restored one goes for around $450 eBay bucks.

Q-jet intakes have gotten stupid expensive. Jim's range is about right for online ads.

I would put a Q-Jet intake at $450 - $550 - seen them sell for that consistently.

66 carbs are junk,,you want 68 or newer...or a 71 800cfm..

the real trick set up is a 1000cfm thermoquad..its the sh!t..it ran circles around holley and Qjets back in the day, they fell out of favor because parts ran out..now you can buy new ones again...it bolts right on the qjet intake

ive paid as little as 50 for an intake,,a couple years ago i bought one for 150..it sat around and i sold it because i didnt think i would ever use it..then when i needed one, none avail but $500+, i thought i got a good deal..and still do

I'm going to use a 67 carb on the Q-jet intake that way I can use the factory kickdown/variable pitch stuff. I've also got an 1971 BB 800 cfm carb that I can put 67 linkage arm on.

dont use 66 and 67 carbs unless its for a resto...they  have lots of issues..most is fuel delivery, the float hanger is weak and just breaks off and the fuel flow has probs..now they sell a kit to fix the issue, but why mess with it on a hot rod..

id use the 71 for sure..send it to mark northcutt..he can swap the stuff and make it for your application..the 71 carbs have a vent bowl tower..so you have to modify an old air cleaner..see if he can put your arm and top on the 71 carb...Marks  good dude..give him your specs and he will build you a carb..you can send yours in or he can just sell ya one
