Some creative photograph tips from Hemmings blog.

Dear owners of photogenic mid-60s Buicks,

Our Buick brother Thomas A. DeMauro has an article on the Hemmings blog on some creative ways to photograph cars:

https://www.hemmings.com/blog/2018/04/10/one-location-two-different-backgrounds-and-some-experimentation-create-subtly-different-looks-for-the-same-car/

Unfortunately, some of the tips require some relatively fancy camera equipment.  The photos where taken with a semi-professional camera and lenses.  Such things are quite desirable and really improve the quality of the photos, but aren't really necessary.

There are really 3 simple tips that can be gleaned from this article:

  • If you go to the trouble of planning a photo shoot of your car - make a point of taking a bunch of pictures!  You can never be sure how the photos will turn out.  The more pictures you take, the better the chance you'll find something you really like when get home and look over the results.
  • Move your car a few times so that you can capture different moods of the light and backgrounds.  I always try to find an empty location with plenty space.  Then I just move the car by say a 1/4 of a turn.  For the photographs in this article, clearly the different effects of the background change the ambience of the photo.
  • Try different camera angles.  One of the best effects is taking the photo from as low as possible.  That makes the car seem to loom up the ground.  Alas, these photos can be hard on your back, but sometimes they are worth it!

Cheers, Edouard  :occasion14:
