WTB shifter and linkage
« on: March 29, 2018, 06:37:13 PM »
Hello,

I will be converting 1965 skylark convertible from auto to 4 speed.

Need to locate shifter assembly and linkage rods  for 4 speed Borg warner T-10.

Thanks,
Robert

I'd recommend a new Hurst shifter. It's quite an improvement over the original Muncie style shifter found on the GS's.
Actually, I think the 300 cid 4 speed Skylarks came with a Hurst shifter from Buick.

I was talking to Robert about this subject, and I was thinking the same thing as Walt. My friend had a 300 skylark with what appeared to be a factory Hurst shifter. I do not think this was a GS option, but a late 65 early 66 skylark shifter. Any thoughts or pics of an original car? I believe it was like this one

I put a new Hurst in mine, what a difference. I got one of the old ones from Crash Enterprises still new in the Box.

What did you find? You should be able to do the frame bracket,z-bar,and clutch pedal while still driving it as is. Hear anything on the other parts yet? Should be there anytime.,Dan

I found parts on Ebay last night. Got a pretty good deal Hurst shifter/linkage complete for T-10 BW including white shifter ball
used / driver condition. Seems to be period correct. The shifter has been rebuilt. $285 including shipping.
I picked up frame bracket from in line tubing $16.
I contacted shipper they estimate  delivery some time this week.
I will start  ASAP with  welding frame bracket,

installing Z bar and pedal. Late summer I will remove trans and make floor cut.

Dan I will let you know when I get the parts.
Thanks,
Robert

64 Skylark and early 65 Skylark with 4-speed  (up until time the GS was introduced) came with a Hurst shifter from the factory.  It was unique to the 64 and early 65 models.  Linkage and mechanism are made differently than any of the Hurst shifters that came from the factory or in the aftermarket in subsequent years.  Looks like the attached pic of my 64 Skylark.  Handle is made into the mechanism and cannot be removed without completely dis-assembling the mechanism.

Dan,
It looks like I bought the shifter (from ebay) that you were referring to on this thread.

I think that is the correct option....The GS did not use the hurst, and you will be much happier with it than the Muncie T handle like mine. The hurst is a tighter, more precise shifter than the GS type. I am not sure why they did that on skylarks, but left the GS with the "hope for a gear" shifter. I was trying for as original as possible on mine or it would have gotten replaced. My friend had an original skylark and it came with the one you guys have pictured.
