WTB 1964 Skylark Fuel Gauge (working)
« on: February 05, 2018, 08:16:05 PM »
As stated, I need a fuel gage for a 1964 Skylark. (Or good lead on a repair service)

Thank you.
:)

I think 64 and 5 are the same. Have you checked the original out of the circuit board? Usually the gauge is not the problem.

Thanks for the reply. :)

The 64 is different.
The 65 is also the same as the 68 and I have one of those.

Used that and a new sending unit to test. (out, on the bench)

The 68 gauge runs up and down with the float, the 64 just pegs full, and if you either move the float to empty, it has a very slight movement (almost imperceptible) but stays pegged at full.

If I remove power, lower the float, and then put power, it drives full again.

I suspect one of the coils is bad, but I don't know where to get the winding or what size wire.

If I cannot find one, I will send it off to someone who repairs them. (anyone have a source?)

I did find a gauge that is listed as "NOS", but it is obvious that it was installed as the needle is faded on the front, and normal orange on the side, and the edge of the gage looks like someone pried it out of the housing rather than turning it.
So, I would rather not spend the money on something that "iffy".

The '64 sending unit is 30 Ohm.  the '65 unit is 90 Ohm.  The dash units can not be mixed and matched with the tank units.  You need both dash unit and tank sender for the same year.

The '65 tank sender is reproduced. I have the '65 dash piece around here extra.

So if you can not come up with the '64 tank sender, both pieces can be changed out to '65 and it will work well. I had to replace my tank sender last fall.  I used one of the new ones available. In the almost 30 years the car has been done, it has never worked really well.  IT DOES NOW, and is  very accurate !

Hi Loren.

I changed my tank to the Spectra Premium EFI tank, so it has a 90 ohm sender anyway.

When I was looking for a PC board a few years ago, I looked at the 1965 board and thought the sender and traces were different (since the back of the sender looks almost exact to 68).

But I found pics of the boards for both the 64 and 65 and see that the traces land at the same places so it will work.

Let me know how much you want for the gauge and I'll send you a check.

 Michael,

I will dig one out.  I must have 8 or 9 complete '65 instrument clusters along with a couple of dash  gauge units on their own.

Just a couple of extra parts . haha
