Correct radiator for auto trans no AC GS ?
« on: January 26, 2018, 08:37:03 PM »
Hi everyone, I've decided that this Winter I want to get the correct size radiator for my White GS (no AC, auto trans). The one that's in there now is just a little to wide and I cannot use the stock upper hose. For those of you who saw my GS in Allentown PA in 2016 that's why I had the upper hose with the sleeve and clamps. I spent this morning doing some research. I came up with a US Radiator part #005157ANNZ radiator with the high efficiency core Made in the US . Would this be correct ? I went in the garage to look at the radiator from the Red Coupe restoration project (no AC, auto trans) that I thought was correct, but the lower hose connection is bent straight up and the photo of the US Radiator the connection is bent up in the 2 o'clock position. So what is correct ? Any advice would be appreciated.  :help:

Tony,

Another possible option, depending on the condition of your radiator tanks, is to have your tanks installed on the correct size replacement core.  That's what I did with mine and it turned out nice.  Converted from a 3-row to 4- row since I'm adding factory A/C, but the 3-row core replacement is available as well.  If you're doing a 'precise' restoration, having the original Harrison tanks on the radiator is a plus.

I had looked at the US Radiator stuff also and planned to buy one from them, but was urged to have my original recored instead.  Costs I believe are similar.  If you buy a US Radiator part, be sure to check around on pricing.  I had found the part number I wanted at both OPGI and Year One, but found Year One to be much less expensive.

I bought a US one from OPGI a few years ago, very nice. I also have an original one that I had refurbished at a radiator shop, both work well.

Thanks, Everyone.   Yes if you could please post some photos of an original radiator with the core dimensions I could see if my tanks are correct. If so then I will have them re-cored. If not then I will start shopping around for the best price on 2 US Radiators. Summit & Jegs carry them also, maybe I can work with them since its no tax and free shipping...
Thanks for the help  Tony

Finally got up in the storage area above my shop space.

Pictures of an original '65 GS non A.C. radiator.

Overall width is approximately 25 3/4 ".
Overall height is approximately 18 + " .
Core is approximately 20 3/4" X 18 " .
The tanks are approximately 3 1/4" deep front to back.

A couple more radiator pictures.
Lower neck for both A.C. and non- A.C. has an upturn.  The upper neck on an A.C. radiator has a 90 degree that is set at a slight angle upwards.  The upper neck for the non- A.C. radiator is straight.

Thanks Loren, Looks like I have an original radiator in the Red GS coupe, It matches up to your photos, I had it re-cored back in 06 so its going back in . Now I have something to compare, next step is to remove the radiator from the White GS and compare. If that radiator does not match up and the tanks are not correct then I will start pricing a new US Radiator #005157ANNZ High Efficiency Core unit.  I will let you know how it goes.

Thanks for all of your help

Hi everyone,   I went over to the heated garage where I keep the White GS on Wednesday the 30th I measured the radiator and to my amazement the measurements were correct. I removed my custom made hose and tried the hoses that some of the parts vendors said would fit  . Gates #20466 no good, tried Gates #20468 no good.  At that point there was nothing I could do but pack up and go back home and re-visit the photos that Loren posted, I looked at that one photo showing the original top hose and printed it out so I would have a reference point. I tried a google search but nothing, then I tried to run a search on Ebay and one popped up. Russ Martin at Centerville Auto in CA shows that he now has the correct hoses upper and lower. So I took my hand off the mouse and gave Russ a call. He was very nice and we talked for a while and I ordered the upper & lower hoses plus a repro water outlet to replace my corroded original.
Late yesterday afternoon the box arrived and everything looked great. Today I went back over to the GS and tried it on, The upper hose fit perfectly !! Christmas in February  Thanks everyone, and thank you Loren for posting the photos and the measurements  I just saved $561.00   :cheers2:
