Complete A/C system off a 64 skylark.
« on: January 23, 2018, 08:55:19 PM »
I've just removed the remainder of the factory A/C system from my 64 Skylark.  I've had this western car for over 30 years and almost everything that came from the factory I have available.  The compressor, condenser and lines were removed and carefully stored in the mid 90's.  All of the dash components I just took off, including the whole inner and outer firewall housings, the evaporator, heater core and hard lines, interior trim, etc.  I am also planning to make templates of the factory firewall cutouts for posterity before I cover them.  Everything worked when I disconnected the system, and the car has always been in dry storage with very few miles added annually.  If you are interested in all or pieces/parts of this system, please email and message me.
Thanks!
Pat

Hi Pat,

I'm in the process of adding factory air to my 65 GS restoration.  I have all the parts I need except a good fan shroud.  I know that most of the AC setup in a 64 Lark will be different and the fan shroud for sure.  What engine was in your 64?  I don't know if that makes a difference, but it might be helpful to add that information.

And if you run across a shroud for a 65 or 66 GS, I'd love to hear about it!  :icon_thumright:

Welcome!

Chuck, the 64 had a 300 in it from the factory, and a 3 core downflow radiator.  The shroud was gray fiberglass (Fremont car).  In 65, the Skylark with 300 switched to crossflow radiator, like the GS has, with a plastic shroud.  The depth from front to back is what makes the GS shroud unique.  I have tried to trim 65 300 shrouds and it didn't work, or look, very good.   Someone did reproduce a 67 GS shroud a while back, which would likely work, but is almost certainly different than the unique 65 GS version.  Not sure if 66 is same as 65, but it probably is.  Good luck in your search.  BTW, I'm not new here, but rarely post :-).

Hey Pat,

Yeah, I'm aware of some of the differences in the shrouds.  I actually have a shroud from a 65 300 and a broken one from a 65 GS.  Add to that a repop of a 65 GS shroud, so it's starting to look like a collection!   :laughing7:

65 and 66 GS shrouds are the same.  The two years of the 401 in the GS.....

Not new here?  I should have known from the number of posts you've had.  So, welcome back!   :headbang:

Good to see you back, Pat.  You are closing in on 10 years here.
Pat and I have a bit of history together.  His GS, which was owned and raced by Carmen, lived in my garage for a number of years.  Pat managed to pry it from me and did a magnificent restoration on it. It also sports one of my white interiors.

Hope to see more of you ,

Now I know who PG is.  Pat, I think we have a sort of kinship since I believe you took over the Buick registry from Steve Shuman and I now own his (and his mother's) car.  We're such a small group here that I shouldn't be surprised at our connections!

...... Someone did reproduce a 67 GS shroud a while back,

I once modded a 65-67 300 shroud to fit my GS. Turned it upside down to match the tank offset of the GS radiator and trimmed about an inch off of the fan opening. It worked well until a blade from the flex fan decided to depart from it's companions.

Kirban Performance made the fiberglass reproduction 65-6 GS fan shrouds.

Yeah, I've talked with Kirban, but I've also been unimpressed with the quality of his repops, especially for a points judged car.  So, still looking for a good original......

Still searching..... :BangHead:
