Metal tag on the front fender?
« on: January 17, 2018, 09:44:20 PM »
I'm seeking information about a tag that is attached to the passenger's side fender of my 65 Skylark GS.  I cannot find any reference to this tag or these numbers anywhere else on the car, nor can I find it referenced anywhere in 1965 Skylark documentation.  It is a Flint car, a thin pillar coupe.  Anyone know what it is and does anyone else have one attached to their car?  Thanks!  John

I was just looking for a post on that subject , I know thats been talked about here as a few other members have those on there cars also .
Its possible that it was a replacement fender at one time but don't  hold me to it .
One of the other guys will probably know .

Looks like a part number tag. I will have to look in the parts book for the number.

I'd wondered if it might not just a part number for the fender.  If it turns out to be, then the next question might be...OEM (from the factory) installation? or sometime thereafter?...  I looked for a past thread but didn't come up with one.  If it has been discussed before, I'll dig deeper on the forum.  Thanks!

Group 8.13 Part # 1396752 is a front fender for a 1965 GS. Why yours has a metal tag is beyond me.

I've seen them before on other 65 Gran Sports. No idea why they are there.
The pic attached is on a WI Fremont built car.

Same size tag was on my radiator support and we did not really know why. The front end sheemetal looked untouched, but I am still of the belief that these tags were on repaired cars. I think they are just ID tags for the parts ID for dealerships. Some have stated they have found them on cars that were never wrecked. I guess if you have owned the car for 50 years that would be the only way to know. I have not found them on any of my parts cars so it is still a bit of a mystery.

We're be pulling the front clip apart soon and then hopefully we'll find more clues on whether it was a replacement or original.  There is clearly a small repair on the right front corner and some primer/lacquer work blending it into the hood, but the rest of the fender looks like original paint.  I will share what we find once it is apart.   Thanks!  John

Watch for a build sheet inside one of the front fenders.  I have found one stuck to the back side of a driver side fender.

In the restoration of my Flint made 65 thin pillar coupe I removed both original front fenders due to severe rot and they did not have that tag on them.

All good info guys.  Thanks for the heads up on the build sheet too, Loren.

The shop just received the floor/trunk pans, so I expect we'll be diving in deeper and removing the fenders shortly.  We'll be looking for clues and build sheets!  Thanks guys!

And the fun begins ! Enjoy the process as much as you can and keep in mind we are here.  Sometimes it is that hard to find part or just how to approach or source something .

There is an immense amount of knowledge here at 65GS.com.
