Rebuilding a fuel pump ?
« on: January 07, 2018, 12:45:55 PM »
I am going to rebuild the fuel pump for my nail head and was wondering if anyone has ever done this before and if you have any tips before I start ?
Also hoping this pump is correct for a 65 GS 401 , anyone know what the number stamped on the flange should be ?  mine has a 6662 .
Thanks

Haven't done it, but the service manual goes through the rebuild.

Fuel pump rebuilt and ready to go . Pretty straight forward but not sure I would tackle it without having a press .

Looks good John.  I bought a new one from Carmen, but nice to know where to send it if I ever need a rebuild!

John, where did you get the rebuild kit from?
It's nice that the 65 pump is rebuildable. The 66 is the crimped style. I have a couple of NOS '66 pumps but I don't know if the rubber diaphragm will last long with today's fuels.

Walt ,  I got the kit from CPC  . ( Classic Preservation Coalition )  The guys name is Hal Houghton and he was VERY nice to deal with .
If you call him and he don't answer right away leave a message , he was very prompt at getting back to me .
His kits come with very detailed instructions and I recommend that anyone rebuilding one of these FOLLOW his instructions very carefully .
Being Ive been working on cars my whole life , when I opened the kit and seen how simple it looked I dug right in without reading the instructions and just about made my main diafram pump rod not useable .  :BangHead:
Just about forgot , the kit was 47.00 plus shipping and the materials he uses with stand todays fuels .

But which classic boat model did you buy? (Re: Rebuilding a fuel pump ?)

Dear John, Loren, and mid-60s Buick owners with a taste for nostalgia,

Walt ,  I got the kit from CPC  . ( Classic Preservation Coalition )  The guys name is Hal Houghton and he was VERY nice to deal with .

. . . . Yeah, but you didn't tell us which of Hal's model boats you bought! . . . . .  :icon_biggrin:

Model ships was another hobby that I've dabbled in, but alas, my modeling skills weren't anywhere close to Hal's!
