Instant 2 car garage addition
« on: December 10, 2017, 04:50:32 PM »
Had a 40 ft shipping container delivered yesterday to use as a 'shed' for tractors and implements.
The possibilities for how these can be used are endless, but this one is just going next to my 32' x 50' pole barn to free up some space in my 2 car attached garage.
For $2k delivered, it's a deal. Water tight and rodent proof. Can't build anything for that price. And it's 'move-in' ready!
The doors are positioned at the rear . The front end will be cut out for a roll-up garage door. This will give me access to both ends so I don't have a 40 ft long tunnel to deal with. Plus, the roll-up will give the box a look more like a  conventional garage. The side view is a different story... it doesn't blend in very well. I may have to plant some trees along the side..... or maybe just paint some trees on.
I feel like a kid that just got a new fort!

Excellent investment, lots of storage for the dollar. Painting some trees on it will help.
So it is 8 ft wide?

Nice find, Walt!  Just paint a big GS and Tri-Shield on the side and all your neighbors will be envious!

Cool. I’ve been thinking about one to. Just for stuff like lawnmowers and extra car parts. It would free up a lot of space in the garage

Dear Walt and mid-60s Buick owners with never enough storage space,

Had a 40 ft shipping container delivered yesterday to use as a 'shed' for tractors and implements.
The possibilities for how these can be used are endless, but this one is just going next to my 32' x 50' pole barn to free up some space in my 2 car attached garage.
For $2k delivered, it's a deal. Water tight and rodent proof. Can't build anything for that price. And it's 'move-in' ready!

It is a really great idea!  It is relatively common for businesses to use a shipping container for extra storage space.  The scuba diving shop where I was working as part of my PhD research mounted one into the back of the store for additional warehouse space.  It was a bit dark and dingy, but it increased the inventory space by probably 20-25%

How come the container was so cheap?  I'm assuming it was too old to be used any longer as a container.  The value as scrap metal must not be much!

The side view is a different story... it doesn't blend in very well. I may have to plant some trees along the side..... or maybe just paint some trees on.

Judging from your photo, just painting the same color as the garage would go a long way toward making it blend in.

I feel like a kid that just got a new fort!

Definitely enjoy your new acquisition!

Cheers, Edouard

I'm about 70 miles from a major port in Newark, NJ. That's where the used containers in my area come from. The service I purchased it from took my order, drove up there to retrieve, then dropped it off at my place. The service was local, so that kept the price down. Services operating from major cities like Philly or Allentown were in the $2500 range. A 20 footer is similar in price as there is higher demand and less supply.
Near new 'one trip' containers are in the $5-6k range. One in this condition is referred to as 'WWT' or wind & water tight. It has some patches but is still structurally sound. Could likely still be used for shipping but it's 14 years old, most get decommissioned after 10 years or so.

On Sunday, I cleared out one bay of my attached 2 car garage... moved out my Kubota and JD tractors, a log splitter, and wood chipper/mulcher into the new 'shed'. Then I took down 80 ft worth of old fluorescent lights and replaced them with 4 of the Costco LED lights.... what an improvement!

Those are becoming used more frequently for many applications. One thing to consider is the wood floors were treated with a compound which slowly releases a potentially lethal gas over time. The treatment allows the wood floors to take incredible punishment from regular loading and unloading with forklifts, not to mention keeping the wood from being affected by insect infestations as well as salt air.

Anyone wanting to convert these into living quarters must remove and replace all wood inside the container. It should be fine for storing various items though.

Around here, I can easily find used 53 foot units which are only used by railways and local trucking and drayage companies.

Nevertheless, great score Walt!  :occasion14: :occasion14:

Dear Walt, Tom, and mid-60s Buick owners who engage in strategic long-term planning . . .

Ah ha!   I was wondering why you were so enthusiastic about the Costco deal on the LED shop lights.  Then when you posted this . . . . . I had my suspicions! Just as I suspected!  :laughing7:

Those are becoming used more frequently for many applications. One thing to consider is the wood floors were treated with a compound which slowly releases a potentially lethal gas over time.

. . . .

Anyone wanting to convert these into living quarters must remove and replace all wood inside the container. It should be fine for storing various items though.

. . . Yeah, but is this lethal gas potentially dangerous to classic Buick parts? . . . .

Cheers, Edouard  :occasion14:
