Interior lights won't go out
« on: September 27, 2017, 08:32:33 PM »
I own an actual '65 Service manual like the one online here and I can't seem to find where/how to troubleshoot this. I see where I t SHOULD be. It started recently. The switches in the door jamb seem to be ok. But I have to pull the battery cable when I parked and the dome/footwell lights are annoying at night. Where should I look first? The rheostat in the dash still dims the speedo light...

Thanks,

Rick

To start troubleshooting, if you have not already done the following.

Pull both the door switch wires off the switches.

The lights should go out. Ground both the wires to the frame at the same time and the lights should come on.

(The switches "ground" or complete the circuit, when the doors open, and the circuit is "open" when the doors are closed and the switch is "pressed")

If the lights stay on, then the switches are not the problem.

If they stay on after disconnecting the wire at both the door switches, then your problem is most likely in the headlight switch.  Turning the knob all the way to the left make the interior lights come on, and the contacts on that switch could be stuck.
