New evaporator core for a 1965 Buick A-Body (???)
« on: September 04, 2017, 07:13:58 PM »
Dear mid-60s Buick parts hounds,

This evening's eBay listing includes a curious offer for an aftermarket under-dash air conditioner system for our beloved Buick A-Body cars:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/64-65-66-67-68-69-BUICK-SPECIAL-AIR-CONDITIONING-NEW-/152690066908?hash=item238d0985dc:m:mmmXGKE3wQSO31JkJ81DzvQ&vxp=mtr

The company that makes it has a dedicated website that you can visit here:

http://autoacsolutions.com/

I've seen their listings for over a year, so I suppose it isn't a fly-by-night company.  Still, I don't know much about them.  Which leads to the potentially more interesting item for the folks on this board.  They also claim to make a new air conditioner evaporator core:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/65-SPECIAL-SKYLARK-CENTURY-A-C-EVAPORATOR-CORE-NEW-/182746987151?hash=item2a8c91ba8f:m:mMfWRKfWaln2cjwCiYqSC-w&vxp=mtr

Now this appears to be a replacement for the original Buick factory air system.  Since I know very little about that system, I sure can't judge and the picture on the listing appears to be broken.  So what do you 1965 Buick A/C experts think?  Is there a ghost of a chance that this could be a usable part?  :icon_scratch:

Cheers, Edouard

Looks like a generic under dash system to me.

Second eBay listing - not first. (Re: Evaporator core for a 1965 Buick)

Dear EZ Cool and mid-60s Buick A/C experts,

Looks like a generic under dash system to me.

Yes you are correct that the first eBay listing is some sort of a generic under-dash A/C system.  However, the potentially interesting item is the second listing.  Here is the link again:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/65-SPECIAL-SKYLARK-CENTURY-A-C-EVAPORATOR-CORE-NEW-/182746987151?hash=item2a8c91ba8f:m:mMfWRKfWaln2cjwCiYqSC-w&vxp=mtr

Could this really be a reproduction of the 1965 Buick A-body evaporator coil?  :icon_scratch:

A curious mind would like to know!

Cheers, Edouard

It appears legitimate, Edouard.  It would be nice to see some pictures though.  I'm always a bit skeptical of parts being offered for sale with no pictures.

The evaporator core listed is for '64 and early '65 Skylarks that use an Suction Throttle Valve.  Later '65 Skylarks and all '65 Gran Sports use a different evaporator core because that AC system uses a POA valve instead of the STV.

The lines are shaped differently between the two styles of evaporator cores and will not interchange.

Options for POA cores? (Re: New evaporator core for a 1965 Buick)

Dear Chuck, Loren, and mid-60s Buick parts hounds,

Later '65 Skylarks and all '65 Gran Sports use a different evaporator core because that AC system uses a POA valve instead of the STV.

The lines are shaped differently between the two styles of evaporator cores and will not interchange.

So can you find a reproduction evaporator core for the 1965 GS?  I'm still curious!  :angel4:

Cheers, Edouard  :occasion14:

Old Air Products listings (Re: Evaporator core for a 1965 Buick)

Dear Loren and mid-60s Buick fans of cool!  :glasses9:

The evaporator core listed is for '64 and early '65 Skylarks that use an Suction Throttle Valve.  Later '65 Skylarks and all '65 Gran Sports use a different evaporator core because that AC system uses a POA valve instead of the STV.

I decided to see if I could find a reproduction evaporator core that uses a POA valve.  It appears that Old Air Products has one:

http://www.oldairproducts.com/catalog/evaporators/10-6153/evaporator-coil-p-83.html?Make=Buick&Model=GrandSport&Year=1965

It doesn't list it has having the POA valve but the category listing does list it has having that valve:

http://www.oldairproducts.com/catalog/factory-replacement-parts/evaporators-c-2_10000_10013.html?Make=Buick&Model=GrandSport&Year=1965

They do list a large number of parts for the 1965 Buick Gran Sport:

http://www.oldairproducts.com/catalog/factory-parts/factory-replacement-parts-c-2_10000.html?Make=Buick&Model=GrandSport&Year=1965

So if you need parts for your factory A/C system, you might give these guys a try.

Cheers, Edouard

This should be correct for Gran Sport and later '65 Skylark.
