Tilt column shift handle - loose and rattles
« on: August 24, 2017, 11:30:04 PM »
Hi Everyone,
Looking for some help here. My tilt column shift lever fits loosely in the column. I wonder if the lever is the right one. I took a pic of one that came with the car, along side it is one  from a non tilt. The non tilt is not compatible but I thought I'd try it in case they were the same.

Do I have the wrong lever? Is there a shim or a spring im missing?

Thanks for looking and any advice!

Tony

Top lever looks like it should work but the one in my car does not have a bend in it.

There should be a spring inside the hole in the column that keeps tension on the lever.

This is for an automatic shifter.

Tony,
There is a spring you are missing.  Unfortunately on the tilt column, that spring is a flat piece of metal type spring that bends when you move the handle.  It is attached with a screw from the inside of the shift bowl.  Which means a complete disassembly of the tilt column if yours is missing.

Thanks Guys,
I'll have a look at the column to see if my spring is missing or somehow stuck. Really hoping not to have to disassemble the column  :sad1:
