Vent window seal replacement ?
« on: August 02, 2017, 08:52:59 PM »
I removed the doors from my thin pillar (post) GS restoration project, the left door is on the door cradle, I stripped everything out of the door. At the bottom of the window the steel channel that holds the window onto the bottom track is rotted and fell apart.. I have steel in stock that I can weld to make a new channel and weld it onto the track, no problem.. I ordered all the door weather strips that I need from OPGI today, done...
The only thing that I don't quite understand is how to replace the vent window seal ? I've never replaced one before ! I rather ask now then make a stupid mistake, I'm sure someone has done it. Any advice would be helpful, trying to move this GS project along so I can get it in for paint in the Fall or early Spring.
                                                                                     Thanks.

Tony,

I assume you're talking about the "V" shaped seal for the vent glass? The vent window assembly is out?
First thing is read through the attached article.

The pair of vents wing windows will break down into these parts. Roughly.

Excellent info if you are working on a hardtop or convertible! The big difference if you are working on a post , wagon, or sedan  is that the frame is riveted on the horizontal frame and the diagonal pivot point is also riveted to the frame! The horizontal rivets have to be drilled out in order to fit the weather strip in the frame! The up right weather strip has tabs that also must be crimped down!

Yes mine is a post coupe, thanks for adding that information, when the parts arrive next week and we get some good weather I will lay it all out on the bench & start disassembly.
                                                       Thanks

Steeles video on the process. (Re: Vent window seal replacement ?)

Dear mid-60s Buick caregivers,

Steele Rubber Products has posted a video on how to replace the vent window seals.  They publicized it to today's email newsletter.  Here is the link:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KkfBU7ec0HA

It appears to be reasonably close to the procedure that the article that Mark posted in this thread proposes.
