1965 T-10 for GS skylark for sale
« on: September 13, 2009, 10:44:10 AM »
I have a date coded 1965 GS T-10 4 speed for sale.  Looks excellent and shifts great.  (a freind of mine pulled it from a 65 GS about 10 years ago, was going to put in a rod, but decided to go automatic.  This is all I have of the Buick.  Looking to get $1200 for it.  Probably one of the last 4 speeds that are date coded for the buick GS up for sale. Can anybody tell me what the WD1543 means stamped on the case?  I forgot to take pics of the 1965 casted into the case for id purposes.

WD1543 would be the assembly date code for the case.
According the Duane's Date Code book,
W= Borg Warner
D= April
15= 15th
4= 1964
3= 3rd shift

 :confused4: All 65 GS 4 speeds I've seen have the "GS" cast into the tail shaft on the drivers side, between the shifter boss'es. Also "KR" in yellow paint on the pass. side. April 64 is quite a streatch till Dec. 29 when the GS was announced. Could this be for a 64 300 v-8??

I was wondering about the 1964 date too.
Maybe the worker just got the 4 and 5 mixed up....making the actual build date April 14, 1965.
The GS trannys also had 3 grooves cut into the splines on the input shaft. I'm not exactly sure what that signifies....maybe it ID's it as the close ratio GS trans?

Brian Stone might be able to help straighten this out.

Brian is the most knowledgable person I know of when it comes to the four speed set-up's.

I'll send him a message to take a glance at this.

The input shaft and the tail housing are the indicators.  Need to see pictures of them to identify it.  The date code does sound suspicious.  The casting numbers on the side of the main case don't answer the question--the main case is the same as the regular T10 in the 300 V8 cars.
  If it is a GS, the tail housing will have T10-7K on the side of it (the k and the 7 may be reveresed--can't remember).  A regular syklark T10 will have T10-7D on the side of the tail housing.
  In addition, the GS trans has "GS" cast between the shifter bosses on the tail housing as was mentioned earlier in this thread.

Right...GS trans should have 3 grooves on the input. In Steve's ad on V8Buick, it looks like there is only one groove on the input.
Brian, do the munber of grooves denote whether it is a wide ratio or close ratio? ie
3 grooves= close ratio GS
1 groove= wide ratio Skylark?
'GS' on tailshaft....Someone posted (Ted?) that his Wildcat 4 speed also has the 'GS' on the tail. So it's possible just one tailshaft was used on all 65-66 4 speed cars, big and small.

I have never seen one with just one groove on the input shaft--the one in a regular skylark has no grooves.  It could very well be that it came out of a Wildcat.  They are even more rare than the Skylark GS, so I have never had my eyes on one of those.  Another identifier is the side cover--the 64 and newer T10's came with the thinner, diecase side cover (has the two big indentions in it from the outside)

Standard Wildcat 4-speed also had the 3 groove input shaft.
I replaced my gears with a high nickel NOS set of 2.56 (first gear) and they have 1 groove.

Ted, does the tailshaft housing on your 'cats have the 'GS' on it?
And I like the idea of swapping in new gears into the T-10. Nailheads love wide-ratio trannies!     ....I won't ask what it cost, cause I'm too cheap! :snorting:

From the pictures in the link to V8Buick, the side cover has been changed out with an earlier sand-cast one.  Pretty typical change since the newer di-case ones are very prone to crack on the gussets.
