Rear upper Control arm bushings fit loose
« on: February 01, 2017, 06:36:45 PM »
Well , I took out the bushings in all 4 of my rear trailing arms today so I could sand blast them and get them painted .
After removing the bushings I thought I (TEST ) fit the new bushings , but when I put the bushings in the upper trailing arm ( front hole ) they slid in with only hand pressure .
I know these are supposed to pressed in .   The bushings I got were NOS bushings off E-bay so I thought maybe someone listed them wrong .
Then I tried them in the lower trailing arms and they fit correctly , they won't go in all way without pressing them in.
So , are my upper trailing arm holes stretched ?   They did have some very hard polyurethane bushings in the that came out hard .
I believe the rear trailing arm bushings are all the same size for upper and lower .
Not sure what to do besides getting a different set of upper trailing arms .
Anyone  run into this ?

While i,m on the subject of trailing arms , on the rear lower trailing arms are these 2 larger holes suppose to be in there or did someone drill these for a rear sway bar ?
The rear suspension on this car was really cobbled togeather . OH the joy of trying to straighten out his mess !   :icon_scratch:

John,

Those are supposed to be there, although have seen control arms without them. Most had those holes which can be used for bolting on a rear sway bar. If you want a sway bar it's best to box those arms before re-installing.

But your'e doing so well.  It looks like those might have had bolts through those holes at one time.  Hard to tell from the pix.  Are they boxed?

As for your upper control arms. I've never had a set I didn't have to press in.

I even made my own tool for control arm bushing installation.  After the bushing is pressed in I can remove the inner collor with a hammer by striking the rod. The collor rods are offset so the collor will completely surround the bushing.

Dan , Kevin ,
Yes there was a sway bar on the car but it was bolted to a 1/4 thick steel plate that was 4"x8" , and that plate was bolted to the trailing arm to drop the sway bar down .   I know it was not right but I think it was to clear the 12 bolt posi out of a chevelle .
Anyway just was,t sure the holes were suppose to be there since these cars never had sway bars . I,ll just go ahead and use the lowers then BUT it looks like I need to find a set of uppers .  Only thing I can think of is that when they pressed in the aftermarket urethane bushings in it expanded the hole .
By the way Kevin I like the installation tool you made . I might have to make one of those . I usually just use a piece of wood cut to the right thickness .

For our control arm bushing installation, my friend has a selection of sections from different diameter exhaust pipes that he uses.  They're not the sturdiest, but they work.

Kevin's approach is obviously better!
