New book on preparating for roadside emergencies
« on: December 21, 2016, 11:13:45 AM »
Dear mid-60s Buick road trip planners,

The Hemming's blog had an interesting article about preparing for roadside emergencies:

It is a review of a new book that has its own website:

There is a quote from the blog entry that is rather sobering:

Quote
Things are different today, and cell phones have convinced most drivers that they don’t need to learn the skills necessary to cope with common roadside emergencies. Aside from your humble author, who wants to change a flat tire by the side of the road, in the dark and the rain, when he can wait for AAA to come to the rescue? Are such skills even handed down to new drivers today? In many families, I suspect the answer is “no.”

I fear this is part of a deeper malaise that is seriously weakening the Western world.  On the face of it, if you have the choice of preparing your car for roadside emergencies or talking with your friends on social media - the choice should be obvious.  Reality demands that you be ready for roadside emergencies, your friends on social media will still be there when you have completed your preparations.  How many of our younger people realize this?

Definitely some food for thought.
