I may be dreaming but....looking for 65 GS hood scoop accents
« on: November 28, 2016, 06:24:54 PM »
While they may be hens teeth, thought I would reach out and see if anyone has a set stashed away they would be willing to part with.
If I cannot find a set to buy, anyone interested in renting me a set that I can use as a model to create casting beds or scan for CAD import?
Have contacts both in the casting and modeling businesses that may be able to reproduce suitable copies.

Thanks
Eric

Eric,

'65 Buick Skylarks and Gran Sports do not have hood scoop accents.
Could it be the '66 Gran Sport you are thinking of ?

Perhaps 1967 hood scoops on a 1965? (Re: 65 GS hood scoop accents)

Dear Eric, Loren, and mid-60s Buick fans of . . . . extra flair!

While they may be hens teeth, thought I would reach out and see if anyone has a set stashed away they would be willing to part with.

As Loren mentioned, the 1965 Buicks had no hood scoops.  However, there are a number of 1965 Buicks that have been fitted with 1967 GS hood scoops.  This 65GS.com post has a link to photos of a 1965 Buick Skylark with 1967 hood scoops:

The 1967 GS hood scoops can be found used and there is a fellow in Canada who makes the insert for the chrome portion of the hood scoop.  Is this what you had in mind?

Cheers, Edouard  :occasion14:

Well that definitely explains my thought that are rare...more like non-existent.....
Since this is going more a pro-touring look, 66 would work.

Any sources?

'66 GS 'Venti-ports'....
Forum member Wheelz had some for sale, freshly rechromed.

Yes, they are scarce. Nice sets are very hard to find, and pitted ones are out there but very expensive to restore..... much like 1965 taillight chrome!

I'm partial to the '66 version vs the 67 scoops. IMO, the '66 is a nice accent, while the 67's just look fake! 1968 featured a 'cowl-induction' that could perform but lacked a real performance look. 69-up had the 'look' but wasn't quite as functional.....no ram effect, just cold air.

If you want stealth performance, a ram-air setup using ductwork pulling air from a good location (under bumper, headlight opening, or around the radiator support) is a good alternative to a hood scoop. 1968 had an optional setup that pulled fresh air from the cowl vent area thru the firewall!

Try used or look farther afield? (Re: 65 GS hood scoop accents)

Dear Erik, Walt, and mid-60s Buick fans of cool!  :glasses9:

I'm not sure, but I believe that it is harder to graft the 1966 scoop accents onto a 1965 hood than the 1967.  I'm aware of at least 3 1965 cars with the 67 scoops.  I've never seen anyone make the 1966 scoops fit on the 1965 hood.

Also there is someone making the insert piece for the 1967 scoops.  You would be on your own for the 1966.

Any sources?

You could post a request in the parts wanted part of this forum:

http://65gs.com/board/index.php?board=7.0

Another Buick resource is the larger forum V-8 Buick:

http://www.v8buick.com/

With more participants you might have better luck finding someone will to sell you these parts.  However, both 1966 and 1967 parts are extremely rare.  Be prepared to search and wait if you want either set.

Something else to ponder is perhaps adapting scoops form some other car.  the 1964 GTO has scoops that look similar to the 1967 GS.  There are reproduction parts for that scoop.  Unfortunately the sheet metal parts aren't reproduced.  I don't know how rare those are.

I hope that's a little food for thought.

Cheers, Edouard

I greatly appreciate all the detailed information.
Not looking for high functionality as the final product will most likely be LS powered pro-touring type set up.
Love the looks of the trim as discussed and gives it some "Buick" distinction.
Already having the LS GTO covers reworked to have Buick on them.

There was a guy that built in 70 scoops to a 65 hood, looked great but a lot of work.

Dear Erik and mid-60s Buick customizers,

Already having the LS GTO covers reworked to have Buick on them.

Wow!  That does sound interesting!  Could you post some pictures of how that turns out?
