ST300 ID
« on: June 09, 2016, 11:10:08 AM »
Hi Everyone!

Going tomorrow to look at a 65 GS Convertible, reputed to be original engine and transmission. I'm not worried about determining originality on the engine, but what about the transmission? Was anything other than "NK" stamped on the trans that would positively associate it with the car? It's my understanding no full or partial VIN was stamped on the transmissions. Thank you for your help!

JC,

VINs were stamped on the manual transmissions, do not know about the ST300 cars.

Welcome JC!

In addition to the 'NK' stamping, the model year and 'production day built' is also stamped on the servo cover.
If you have the warranty booklet protecto-plate, 'NK' and the date code is stamped on it as well.

There is also a 3 digit date code stamped on the engine block. I don't believe anyone has determined how close that date should be to the transmission build date.

Let us know how the car inspection goes.

Looking at the top of the transmission, it is on top at the very front edge, over the upper-passenger-side mounting ear.   Only way to see it with trans in the car is using a mirror.

The vin on my BW T-10 4 speeds is stamped into the tailhousing on the top surface, adjacent to the case.

That is interesting.  Different plants must have put them in different places. My 64 and my 65 both have the VIN stamped on the BW T10 in the location I described.

Thanks for the help! Engine is original to the car, I pulled 65 NK 246 off the trans. I believe that to be a June 24th build? I think that would make sense as the car was built in August. NK246 is also stamped on the Protecto-Plate in the warranty booklet, which is with the car. What say you? Thanks again guys!
