Sheet metal parts
« on: May 16, 2016, 09:11:35 PM »
Aside from buying a donor car, anyone have suggestions on where to get sheet metal sections for my 65 Special?

Specifically looking for the sheet metal just in front of the windshield. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Lots of places to get sheet metal, I usually go here http://tamrazsparts.com/ they offer free shipping. They carry two lines, AMD and another, I always get AMD. I've had good luck with it fitting. You might also check Summit they have free shipping on orders over $100.
I don't know were you live, there could be one near you.

I didn't really see anything there for a 65 Buick.

You will seldom find parts for Skylark. Have to look at Chevelle, Cutlass and LeMans parts instead.

Sorry I should have mentioned there site is NOT user friendly. It takes some looking around, once you learn the sites quirks and dysfunctionality you can find stuff. If you do find something you want as you check out it will ask to estimate shipping, move past that and shipping should be free. Hope this helps.

Is this what your'e looking for?  http://www.tamrazsparts.com/64-67-gm-a-body-lower-windshield-channel-front-dash-top-repair-panel-amd/

Should have gone to the site first before giving advice. That really is NOT user friendly.

The piece you are looking for is not a good repop. It is not wide enough to cover the area and does not fit very well. There is a guy on eBay (mrrogerz) that parts these cars. He did have a complete windshield cut that he would probably trim down and ship(you would have to verify). I think that would be your best bet in the situation you are in. There is no seam there from the factory, so the dash is actually the rusted area. The last one I did,I found it easier to buy a rust free used dash area and drilled out all the spots to replace. I bought parts from him before and it was not expensive. Maybe someone else on here has a parts car that has a good one,but they are not growing on trees these days. 64-5 only and 65 only to be more precise. The 64 dashes need to be drilled for dash pad.

I've replaced that windshield channel with a repo for a Chevelle. Fit my '66 well.
I did a pictorial how-to on it here:
http://65gs.com/board/index.php/topic,147.0.html

Someone else here did say the '65 is different.... the channel on the '66 is a separate piece, but it was said on the '65 the channel is the same piece of metal as the upper dash.

I recently removed the complete piece from a '65 Skylark A/C parts car.
The front window channel, the area that is between the glass and cowl vent and the inside dash are all one piece of metal.

I think there are two different aftermarket pieces available. If I remember correctly, Jon T told me one fits better then the other. I don't recall which it is though.

The chevelle piece will definitely fit,but I was not sure how rusty the actual glass channel was in the pic. It may be easier to blast the rust and see what is left. The pieces that are available only cover the lower windshield area and do not go into the actual dash ribbon seal area. On the 64-5 cars, that part is a continuous piece with the dash as Loren stated and is glued under the lip. IF one is lucky maybe that glass run area is better than it looks and cleans up ok. There is of course always the option of blasting it and doing a fiberglass repair. We sometimes frown on repairing like it is 1980,but I think it would be a good alternative. The corvette guys might rag on you,but their whole car is made out of the stuff.

What do you mean by 'the dash ribbon seal area'?
The repo piece does include the surface where the windshield seals against.
Here's a pic of my '66 repair. The repo piece is clamped in place.

Never seen that piece before. That is exactly what the doctor ordered, who makes it? All the earlier versions only covered below the chrome moulding. That would work just fine on a 65 and would require very little or no welding. I have been using panel bond on a lot of newer vehicles and I think you could run a strong bead lengthwise underneath where the factory sealant goes and that would work well. It may even be easier to run a slice on the dash front and tuck the new piece under the dash.I don't see any reason this could not be put on any 64-7 because the cowl screens are the same. Dan
