It must be correct for a 69 ZL-1 Corvette also. I am still putting off the $500 a piece bumper job for a bit,so I guess I will also have to wait for the radiator cap....lol.

Parts as investments . . . (Re: Huh???)

Dear Chuck, Dan, and mid-60s Buick parts hounds, . .

Wow, he's sure proud of this radiator cap!

Unfortunately there is a serious side to this sort of crazy prices.  As prices creep up toward these extremes, collecting car parts will start to make sense as an investment.  When that happens we'll end up bleeding even more when we need that special part that cannot be gotten any other way.

I know guys like originality, but this is one of the reasons I try to go with reproduction parts whenever possible.  If you buy a reproduction part, you encourage more reproductions.  Also if you buy reproduction parts, you don't increase the scarcity of original parts.  That should at least slow the price increases.

This is definitely a hobby that is getting hard to play if you don't have a lot of  . . . .

Cheers, Edouard

Here's my interaction with widetires22:

Me:You sure that cap has never been used? You have it listed as new condition but it looks like it may have been spun on a radiator before.

widtires22: It came in a box but you're right it does have slight impression in the gasket. I'll make the change.

I'll be nice and say no more.

Just wait until the next big swap meet when everyone is walking around asking "Have you got any original radiator caps?" Apparently these are going to be the new currency....lol. Can't blame a guy for trying.

Ha! You're probably right.

Still though, this guy is trying to sell a radiator cap for over $500.  It's radiator cap. It maintains coolant system pressure.  That's all.

It's probably just me but I find this type of price gouging a bit disgusting.

Need all buyers to be reasonable (Re: Huh???)

Dear RVA65GS and mid-60s Buick parts hounds,

It's probably just me but I find this type of price gouging a bit disgusting.

I'll be the first to agree with your point, but unfortunately, it only takes one buyer who is a sucker and the seller makes his profit.

Classic cars are out of the realm of utility, so prices aren't bounded by pragmatism.  If you look at the amount of money that really rich people sink to rare cars, their actions aren't being driven by reason.

That's my fear about NOS parts market.  Eventually the parts do dry up.  If very wealthy people start bidding for such parts - us regular guys are simply going to be outbid.  The mid-60s Buicks are a mixed blessing.  They remain not as popular as Buick's later and flasher muscle cars, so people with more money than sense, shouldn't be interested.  Still, people with more money than sense frequently get bored and look for something different.

I want enough interest in mid-60s cars so there are parts, but not too much interest such that I can no longer afford the parts.

Oh well, . . . . Edouard
