The factory shifter linkage for a 65GS T10 will not work on a Muncie.  The angle of the slots in the shift levers is different between Muncie and T10.   From a distance it looks like it would all work, but once you put it on there, the minor differences in the transmissions make a big difference.

Forgot about the slot angles being different...it would be cheaper to just use the shifter and buy the Borg Warner linkage kit for an early vette.

Are the input and output shaft splines the same on the T-10 and Muncie?  I have a new Centerforce clutch for the Muncie and would like it to fit on a T-10.  Also have the output yoke for the Muncie.

Some of them are the same--depends on which year and model Muncie you have.  The input shaft is very obvious--either the coarse 10 spline like the T10, or a very fine spine.  It is obvious if the Muncie has the fine spline.   The output should be the same as the T10 (27 spline) unless your Muncie is one of the M22 versions that came behind some of the chevy the big block engines--they had the larger yoke like is on a Turbo 400 trans.

Thanks Brian.  I just checked and my Muncie M21 has the coarse 10-spline input shaft and (I didn't count them) fine spline output shaft.  Looks like I'm good to go with input and output compatibility.   :hello2:

The good news is the Muncie is a desirable trans (since used in Chevys) and you can most likely sell it for more than it will cost to buy a T10 and come out a little ahead.

I think the front bearing retainer is a larger diameter on the Muncie, the GS throwout bearing won't fit.
Bearing retainer can be turned down on a lathe. Had to do this to my Richmond as well. Retainer also didn't fit the bellhousing, needed a second trip to the machine shop to turn down the flange OD as well.  I haven't heard of the flange being larger on the Muncie, but you better check.

Good point Walt.  I should have separated this from John's for sale thread initially.

Our Moderator in Chief is busy dividing and conquering a Honey Do list in preparation for an upcoming family event.  I think he has better things to do at the moment than moderating!  :icon_thumright:

I'll check on the bearing issues that you brought up.  Thanks for helping me avoid surprised along the way.

Actually, Brian, Walt and others have provided a lot of good information pertaining to this Borg Warner T-10 transmission. Since I am not that familiar with the nuances of the 4-speed transmissions, I really appreciate the input. What a great website!!!  John

I have actually run into variations among the T10s with the diameter of the surface the clutch release bearing rides on.  I have had to machine them down for the GS release bearing and collar to fit on them.  Have never run into the issue with the pilot diameter on the input bearing retainer not fitting in the bellhousing though.  Chuck, if you run into issues with it, I have a lathe.  Just have to send me the input bearing retainer and tell me what dimensions you need it machined to.

I think Car Craft used a 63 Impala Hurst shifter. Crash every once in a while has the 65-66 GS Hurst shifter for sale, I picked one up new in the box from him about 2 yeas ago. I still have the instructions from the box.

Hi Jim,

If you can find those instructions, I'd be interested in the part number for the 65-66 GS.  Or if you can scan and email the instructions to me that would be super!

Did the shifter come with the correct installation kit for the 65-66 GS?  I assume that's what makes it specific to our cars and that the shifter itself is pretty universal.

Thanks,

Chuck

Here are the items you need.  I have done this enough now that I saved this in my part numbers list so I didn't have to figure it all out again.  Make sure you are sitting down when you see the prices (Summit has them)--Hurst stuff has gone WAY up in the last 5 years.  The shifter itself has gone up enough that you may want to find a used mechanism on Ebay.

Thanks Jim.  Brian has supplied part numbers; I guess I'm curious if the old NOS shifter has a different part number.

Enjoy your time in the Great Lakes state.  We've conjured up some fine weather for you!

Have a great weekend,
