adding ac
« on: April 22, 2016, 11:26:30 AM »
Wanting to add a.c. to my car, was thinking about using the hang on unit but don't think there's enough room with the tach. Has anybody installed the combo heat a.c. unit? I've heard I'll loose some of my glove box

There's a couple of people that have done real nice installs, maybe they will post. Great thing to add, especially if you do any driving in the south.

Check out this thread on this subject:  http://65gs.com/board/index.php?topic=2347.0

My car isn't finished yet, but I've made all the modifications required to install factory air.  Not so bad.  And there are other suggestions contained in the above thread.

Good luck and come on back with any questions that arise.

Vintage Air is also possible. (Re: adding ac)

Dear gsbuick65, Jim, Chuck and mid-60s Buick owners needing to "chill out" . . . .

Wanting to add a.c. to my car, was thinking about using the hang on unit but don't think there's enough room with the tach. Has anybody installed the combo heat a.c. unit? I've heard I'll loose some of my glove box

I have a Vintage Air system that was originally intended for a 1964-67 GTO.  With the help of the shop that installed the engine, they managed to solve most of the problem about routing hoses and stuff.  Yes, you'll need to change your glove box, but I have a template you could use to create for yourself a smaller but very nice looking box:

There are two options for the vents.  You can go with an under dash unit, but you are correct, that doesn't leave room for the gauges.  I went about it "da' hard way" and created in-dash vents.

I got some OEM vents for a 1965 for the outer vents.  I found some aftermarket vents for the two center vents:

With some help from the shop, they were able to make a 1965 A/C control work with the vintage air system, so it looks original.

The engine bay also looks neat and clean with the installation although I have a 1968 Buick big-block so that make things a bit simpler:

It is a lot of work, but the results are very satisfying!

Cheers, Edouard  :occasion14:
